Uncertainty for students and parents after Lenana School orders temporary closure following Monday incident

Date:

Lenana School in Nairobi has been closed indefinitely after unrest was reported at the institution on Monday night, prompting the administration to ask parents and guardians to collect their children from the school starting Tuesday morning.

In a notice issued on June 2, the school informed parents that all learners would be released temporarily following what was described as a period of restlessness and disturbance during evening prep sessions on Monday, June 1.

The management stated that the move was necessary to restore calm and allow a full assessment of the situation before normal learning can resume.

The communication directed parents to begin picking up students from 8:00 a.m. and emphasized that no learner would be permitted to leave the school compound alone.

According to the notice, every student must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or an authorised representative during the collection process.

School leaders explained that the decision was reached after consultations between the Board of Management and the administration.

While confirming that unrest had occurred, the institution did not provide details on what triggered the disturbance or the events that unfolded during the night.

The administration said the temporary closure is intended to create an opportunity for the school to restore normal operations and carefully evaluate the situation.

Parents were also assured that additional communication would be shared once a decision is made regarding when students should return to school.

Despite concerns raised by the incident, the school has not reported any injuries or damage to property. It has also not indicated whether investigations are being carried out into possible disciplinary or security-related issues connected to the unrest.

The closure comes at a time when concerns over student disturbances in secondary schools continue to attract national attention.

In recent months, several schools across the country have experienced cases of unrest linked to student protests, disciplinary matters, and disagreements between learners and school administrations.

On the same night as the incident at Lenana School, Tarakwo High School in Bomet County reported a fire outbreak. Emergency teams responded to the situation, and no casualties were reported.

Authorities have not linked the two incidents.

However, the developments have renewed discussions about student welfare, discipline, safety, and mental well-being in boarding schools as education stakeholders continue to seek lasting solutions to recurring cases of unrest.
