Detectives have arrested a man suspected of orchestrating a scheme involving nine fraudulent insurance compensation claims linked to a road accident along Kangundo Road in September 2023.
Edwin Odhuambo Oduor was arrested by detectives from the Insurance Fraud Investigations Unit (IFIU) over allegations that he arranged for different individuals to file compensation claims while falsely claiming they had sustained injuries in the accident.
The accident occurred on September 8, 2023, and involved two motor vehicles. One of the vehicles, registration number KCT 29J, was insured, while the other, registration number KBK 96C, was a third-party vehicle.
The case came under the attention of the IFIU after Jubilee Insurance Company raised concerns about the authenticity of several claims submitted following the accident.
The insurer referred the matter to the detectives for further investigation.Investigators subsequently examined the documents presented in support of the compensation claims and established that some of the records had allegedly been obtained fraudulently from Mama Lucy Hospital and Kayole Police Station.
According to the findings, the documents were used to support claims by individuals who purported to have been injured during the road accident. Detectives then traced the suspected organiser of the claims as they sought to establish how the alleged fraud was carried out and the people involved.
After completing their investigations, the detectives forwarded the inquiry file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for review.
The ODPP recommended that Oduor be charged with conspiracy and insurance fraud.Detectives later arrested Oduor in the Omega area of Kasarani.
He was taken through the necessary processing and is expected to be presented before the Milimani Law Courts to face the charges.
The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by investigators to tackle fraudulent insurance claims and other schemes targeting compensation systems.
Authorities say some cases involve the staging of accidents, fabrication of medical records and other documents, as well as the use of people who did not actually suffer injuries in the incidents being reported.
Investigators are continuing to pursue other individuals who may have been involved in the Kangundo Road claims as they seek to determine the full extent of the alleged scheme.
