A son of the late former Cabinet Minister Simeon Nyachae has been charged in court with stealing money from a company linked to his family. Michael Moragia Nyachae appeared before a magistrate in Nairobi on Friday and denied the accusations against him.
According to the charge sheet, he is accused of taking Sh1.2 million that belonged to Sansora Group Limited.
The alleged theft is said to have taken place on different dates between March 28, 2019, and September 28, 2021, in Kisii County. The prosecution says the offence goes against sections of the Penal Code that deal with stealing.
Nyachae pleaded not guilty when he was brought before Magistrate Caroline Nyaguthie. His lawyers immediately applied for him to be released on bail while the case continues.
One of the lawyers told the court that the accused comes from a well-known family and asked the magistrate to use her discretion in granting bail. The lawyer also described the case as one with little substance, calling it “smoke without fire.” He pointed out that the company named in the charges is a family firm.
The magistrate agreed to free Nyachae on a cash bail of Sh50,000. As an alternative, he could provide a bond of Sh200,000.
The court then set a new date for the matter to come up again. It will be mentioned on September 29 so that pre-trial directions can be given.
The case has drawn attention partly because of the family name attached to it. Simeon Nyachae served in government for many years and was a prominent figure in Kenyan politics and business.
