Kilifi halts school feeding programme after pupils forced into Hindu prayers

Date:

The decision by Kilifi County government to suspend a food supplier has sparked concern across Ganze, where many children depend on school meals for survival.

A video circulating online showed pupils in several schools being compelled to recite Hindu prayers before receiving their meals, something that immediately drew public criticism and prompted swift action from local authorities.

The recordings captured large groups of learners in school compounds and even in secluded areas, following instructions from their teachers to engage in the religious practices.

Some of the clips suggested that head teachers were directly involved in ensuring the students complied with the directives.

After consultations with the County Education Team, Kilifi County Commissioner Josephat Kibiwott directed that the Krishna Children’s Foundation, the organization behind the programme, be suspended from supplying food.

He explained that while offering help is welcomed, it should not come at the cost of imposing religious practices on children.

He pointed out that the group had been operating in schools without making full disclosures to the relevant education offices, raising questions about how it was allowed to operate for so long.

Authorities also moved to confiscate Hindu-related materials that had been distributed in the schools as part of the ongoing investigations.

The suspension has now left a gap in Ganze, an area where many families struggle with the effects of drought and food scarcity.

For hundreds of pupils, the meals offered through the programme were often the only guaranteed source of food during the day.

Parents and education officials fear that children might be the ones to suffer the most from the sudden halt of the initiative.

The county government has since indicated that it is exploring alternative measures to ensure the continuity of school feeding programmes without linking them to religious practices.

The incident has raised concerns about the role of external organizations in schools and the need for stronger oversight. While community partnerships are often vital in supporting education and welfare, the events in Ganze show how easily such efforts can cross boundaries and expose children to practices that may go against their beliefs.

Education stakeholders are now calling for a more transparent system of vetting organizations that partner with schools, to ensure that the welfare and rights of children remain protected.

This development serves as a reminder that while help from outside groups is important, it must always be guided by respect for the values of the communities being served.

For Ganze pupils, the hope is that a new food supply arrangement will be put in place quickly so that their learning is not interrupted by hunger, while at the same time ensuring that no student is forced into practices they do not understand or believe in.
