Growing FKF leadership dispute raises concern over AFCON readiness

Date:

Former Football Kenya Federation Chief Executive Officer Lodvick Aduda has raised concern over the growing tensions within Football Kenya Federation, warning that the dispute could put the country’s chance of hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations at risk. His remarks come at a time when internal divisions within the federation are becoming more visible and increasingly difficult to ignore.

The conflict has taken the shape of a power struggle involving FKF President Hussein Mohammed and his deputy McDonald Mariga. The fallout is linked to the alleged 2024 African Nations Championship insurance scandal, which has triggered sharp disagreements among top officials.

What was once seen as an internal matter has now escalated into a wider leadership dispute that is drawing attention both locally and internationally.

Speaking during a segment on Sporty Monday, Aduda urged those involved to approach the situation with calm and responsibility. He stressed that the federation needs unity at this critical moment, especially with preparations for a major continental tournament already underway.

According to him, the ongoing wrangles risk slowing down key decisions and undermining confidence among stakeholders.

Aduda pointed out that several members of the FKF National Executive Committee who are involved in the dispute also serve in the Local Organizing Committee for AFCON.

This overlap, he noted, could create serious challenges in coordination and planning if the disagreements are not resolved quickly. He questioned how effective preparations can continue when those tasked with delivering the event are divided.

The situation has also caught the attention of FIFA, which has formally written to the FKF National Executive Committee requesting documents related to the dispute.

This follows a move by nine committee members to censure Mohammed and General Secretary Robert Gicheru.

FIFA has given the federation a seven-day window to provide evidence and show steps taken to address the conflict.

Aduda further called for the use of internal dispute resolution mechanisms within FKF to allow both sides to present their cases in a structured and fair process. He maintained that a transparent approach is necessary to restore trust and prevent further damage to the federation’s image.

He also raised questions about the reported transfer of Ksh 42 million to Rickswell Insurance Brokers Limited, saying there is a need to confirm whether the transaction followed proper procedures and complied with FKF regulations.

For Aduda, such financial concerns add another layer of urgency to resolving the dispute.Kenya’s history adds weight to these concerns. The country previously lost the opportunity to host AFCON in 1996 due to lack of preparedness.

With that memory still fresh in football circles, Aduda warned that failure to act now could see a repeat of the same outcome, at a time when expectations are high and the stakes even higher.
