DCI nabs Leonard Ngatia as public pressure mounts over Mwiki assault

Date:

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has confirmed the arrest of a key suspect in the widely condemned Mwiki rape incident.

In a statement shared on Sunday, December 7, Sonko announced that detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had apprehended the suspect, identified as Leonard Ngatia.

Ngatia is accused of brutally assaulting, tying up, raping, and filming the victim an act that sparked public outrage and demands for swift action.

According to Sonko, the suspect is currently being held at Mwiki Police Station under OB No. 47/07/12/2025.

He is expected to face several charges, including grievous harm, arson, and threatening to kill. Sonko praised the DCI team for what he described as a swift and decisive operation.

“This arrest marks a major step towards justice for the traumatised girl and her family. We extend our sincere appreciation to the DCI and the entire team for their efforts,” he stated, adding, “Justice will be served. No retreat. No surrender.”

Sonko also provided a follow-up on the victim’s condition, revealing that the young girl, identified as Faith, had been located after days of distress and fear.

He shared that her ordeal had pushed her to the brink of despair, and she had contemplated taking her own life. However, the intervention of her friend, Tess, helped save her from further harm.

Faith is currently staying at her cousin’s home, where she remains fearful that another suspect, named as Ronald, might target her again.

Sonko assured both Faith and Tess of full protection, emphasizing that no threats or intimidation would derail the pursuit of justice.
