Allegations of police misconduct have emerged against officers attached to Kenya Police Service after a Nairobi resident claimed they were extorted and mistreated while in custody at Central Police Station.
According to the account, the incident began along Chambers Road in Ngara where the individual was reportedly stopped by officers who accused them of possessing narcotics.
The resident claims the officers conducted a thorough search but failed to recover any illegal substance or suspicious item.
Despite the search yielding nothing, the individual alleges they were still taken to Central Police Station instead of being released.
Once at the station, the person claims they were not officially booked into custody but were instead held in a changing room near the station’s entrance.
The resident further alleges that while inside the room, officers demanded Ksh20,000 and threatened to frame them with more than two kilograms of cannabis allegedly stored at the station if the money was not paid.
Fearing detention and possible charges, the individual reportedly contacted a family member for help.
According to the claims, negotiations later reduced the amount to Ksh5,000. The money was allegedly processed through a withdrawal agent rather than being sent directly to the officers.
The resident also alleged that the officers attempted to conceal the transaction by deleting withdrawal messages after the payment was made, though some transaction details were reportedly recovered from a statement.
The individual further described experiencing humiliation and harassment during the ordeal, claiming they were stripped during the search process and later hidden behind refrigerators inside the changing room after a senior officer allegedly approached the area.
The resident believes the senior officer may have suspected irregular activity but did not pursue the matter further.
The allegations have sparked concern online, with some Kenyans calling for investigations into alleged extortion and abuse of power by rogue officers.
No official response had been issued by police authorities at the time of publication.
