Spotlight shifts to police officer after suspect in daughter’s kidnapping dies in Malindi cell

A 25 year-old man suspected of abduction has been discovered dead in a police cell in Malindi, merely three days following his arrest.

Lucky Odhiambo was taken into custody on Tuesday, April 14, by detectives from the DCI, who were part of the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CR&IB), along with their colleagues from the Malindi sub-county.

Authorities reported that Odhiambo was allegedly involved in the kidnapping of a 17 year-old daughter of a senior police officer stationed at Malindi GK Prison.

They accused Odhiambo of demanding a ransom of KSh 200,000 from the family while also threatening to harm the minor.

Police commander Moses Kosgei confirmed his death, with authorities asserting that the suspect took his own life using clothing.

However, human rights activists, led by Vocal Africa’s Walid Sketty and Malindi’s Victor Kaudo, challenged the police’s assertions, suggesting the possibility of foul play in this incident.

The senior police officer whose daughter was kidnapped by the deceased is now the center of investigation.
