The National Police Service has announced tighter security measures across Nairobi ahead of the Saba Saba commemorations, saying the move is intended to maintain order and reduce disruptions that have been experienced during previous events.
According to a statement released on Monday, police will set up enhanced security checkpoints on several roads across the city on Tuesday, 7 July 2026.
The checkpoints are expected to regulate both pedestrian and vehicle movement as thousands of people prepare to mark Saba Saba, a day that has long been linked to Kenya’s push for multi-party democracy and is often accompanied by demonstrations.
Police explained that the decision follows experiences from previous Saba Saba commemorations, where some incidents reportedly led to breaches of peace and interrupted normal business activities. Traders, workers, commuters, and other city residents have in the past experienced delays and disruptions during the annual event.
“As a security measure, there will be enhanced police checkpoints on various roads within Nairobi city tomorrow, 7 July 2026, to control both human and vehicular movement,” the police statement read in part.
The National Police Service said the security operation is meant to help officers monitor movement across the city and respond quickly to any situation that may threaten public safety.
Motorists and pedestrians have been advised to expect delays at some checkpoints and to cooperate with officers carrying out security checks.Police also appealed to members of the public to follow the law and work with security officers throughout the day.
They said cooperation from residents would help ensure that people go about their activities peacefully while allowing security agencies to perform their duties effectively.
“Members of the public are urged to obey and cooperate with the National Police Service to ensure that peace and order prevail. Any unlawful acts shall be met with the full force of the law,” police said.
The announcement comes as authorities continue preparations for the annual Saba Saba commemorations, which attract public attention because of their historical significance and the demonstrations that are often organised on the day.
Residents travelling within Nairobi have been encouraged to plan their journeys in advance, follow official traffic directions, and stay informed about any changes affecting movement across the city as security officers remain on duty throughout the commemoration.
