Kanyonyo checkpoint operation ends in arrest of nan linked to illegal firearms network

Date:

A police operation at the Kanyonyo Vehicle Checkpoint has led to the arrest of a man suspected of playing a major role in an illegal firearms trafficking network after officers recovered firearms and a large quantity of ammunition hidden inside the vehicle he was travelling in.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the suspect was intercepted on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, while travelling towards Nairobi.

Acting on intelligence, officers carried out a thorough search of the vehicle, leading to the recovery of the concealed firearms and ammunition.

While the police did not immediately reveal the number or type of firearms seized, they described the operation as an important breakthrough in the ongoing fight against the illegal arms trade. Authorities believe the recovery has disrupted a supply chain that has been moving illegal firearms into Nairobi and other parts of the country.

Preliminary investigations suggest the suspect may have been involved in the unlawful sale, supply and distribution of firearms and ammunition across several regions.

Detectives believe the recovered weapons were being transported to Nairobi and nearby areas, where they could have ended up in the hands of criminal groups and been used to commit serious offences.

In a statement, the National Police Service said investigators are working to establish the full scope of the suspected network. Police believe the man may have links to other individuals involved in the movement and distribution of illegal weapons.

“The suspect is deeply involved in the illicit sale, supply and distribution of illegal firearms and ammunition across multiple regions,” the National Police Service said, adding that investigations are still ongoing.

The suspect is currently being held in police custody as detectives continue questioning him.

Investigators are also trying to identify other people who may have participated in the alleged operation, including those believed to have supplied, transported or intended to receive the firearms and ammunition.

Police said the suspect will remain in custody until investigations are completed. Once the investigations are finalised, he is expected to be arraigned in court to face charges related to the unlawful possession and trafficking of firearms and ammunition.

The arrest comes as security agencies continue to increase operations targeting the spread of illegal firearms across the country.

Authorities have repeatedly warned that illegal weapons remain one of the main factors contributing to violent crime, armed robberies, banditry and other forms of organised criminal activity.

The Kanyonyo Vehicle Checkpoint, located along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway, has become one of the country’s key security points.

Over the years, officers stationed at the checkpoint have intercepted suspects linked to a range of crimes, including drug trafficking, counterfeit goods and the transportation of illegal firearms.

Security agencies say intelligence-led operations carried out at strategic checkpoints have helped prevent illegal items from reaching their intended destinations while providing investigators with valuable information about criminal networks operating across the country.

The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the public by continuing to carry out targeted operations aimed at stopping the movement of illegal firearms before they reach criminal groups.

“We remain unwavering in our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Kenyans, residents and visitors,” the service said, while urging members of the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities that could help prevent crime and improve public safety.
