How a cabal of raiders staged a boardroom coup at Nairobi Hospital

Every catastrophe in a great institution has a moment of conception. For Nairobi Hospital that moment came the day a handful of individuals who could not tell a stethoscope from a catapult slipped an amendment into the articles of association of the Kenya Hospital Association (KHA).

The alteration was not debated in medical consultants’ retreats, nor presented for the scrutiny of the men and women who actually wield the scalpel.

It was slid through with the oily discretion of a pickpocket at a crowded funeral.

KHA, an open-membership body originally intended to offer its subscribers concessionary reprieve, was surgically transformed into a blunt instrument of lay majoritarianism.

With that single stroke of the pen, the professional voice of the Admitting Staff Association (ASA) comprising doctors at the core of the hospital’s clinical soul was asphyxiated.

What followed was the mother of all scavenger-feeding frenzies. The focus shifted to the hospital’s cash reserves, which once stood at a comfortable Ksh 2 billion at any one given time.

The pirating cabal could not stop itself from drooling at the thought of ‘idle’ cash reserves.

By neutering the doctors’ caucus, the KHA constitution was effectively weaponised to ensure that no medically trained conscience could stand between the looters and the loot.

There and then, the fox was voted head of the henhouse. The cascade of phantom projects that ensued tells it all. From private parking lots, a list of vanity ventures, and a host of sundry preposterous developments that took centre-stage had patients nowhere in mind.

Meanwhile, the General Meeting of 2024 became a booby trap. When ASA members took issue with a legion of hirelings brought in as KHA members ostensibly to upset the equation of representation that became a doorway to the mother of subterfuge.

The forced absence of the bona fide voice of the ASA members morphed into a trap that the doctors, with all their good intentions, walked straight into.

The stench wafting over Nairobi Hospital today is unmistakable.

A PET machine that could be acquired for Ksh 400 million has been grotesquely ballooned to Ksh 1.2 billion, a mark-up that would embarrass any pirate.

The same cabal, finding its scheme under scrutiny, has begun to peddle the infantile falsehood that President William Ruto—the ceremonial Patron of the hospital, a tradition unbroken since Jomo Kenyatta—harbours designs on the prime acreage.

It is a lie so threadbare that can only proceed from the mind of an individual with a twisted mind. Now clearly under siege, the oversight of Nairobi Hospital is in the hands of boardroom buccaneers and financial philistines who regard a balance sheet as a personal buffet.

These are tenderpreneurs whose insatiable appetite for other people’s money is out of this world.

These nerveless bootleggers have degraded a national icon into a till.

The time has come for the doctors to reclaim their hospital, and for these interlopers to be named, shamed, and ejected with the contempt they have earned.

This is not an ethnic cesspit so leave that notorious blogger and kinsman of Kisii Dogo out of this tafadhali!
