Motorists using Mombasa Road on Saturday morning faced long delays after a concrete-mixer lorry overturned in the Syokimau area, causing a major traffic jam along one of Nairobi’s busiest highways.
The accident led to heavy congestion that affected thousands of road users travelling between Nairobi and Mombasa.
According to reports from the scene, the lorry overturned and fell onto the Nairobi Expressway, damaging guard rails near Astrol Petrol Station opposite Nation Printers.
The incident blocked several lanes and disrupted the normal flow of traffic along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
As a result, vehicles were left crawling for hours, with traffic stretching from Mlolongo towards Nairobi’s Central Business District.
Some motorists said they spent more than one hour and twenty minutes stuck in the jam as traffic moved slowly through the affected section.
Videos shared by road users showed emergency and road safety responders at the scene working to manage traffic and clear the overturned truck. Authorities were also seen assessing the damage caused by the accident and coordinating recovery efforts to restore normal movement along the highway.
Despite the scale of the disruption, no injuries were reported from the accident. Recovery teams continued their work throughout the morning as congestion increased on both sides of the road.
The incident once again highlighted the challenges motorists face whenever accidents occur along major transport corridors connecting Nairobi to other parts of the country.
The Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association of Kenya (LODCA) also issued a traffic alert warning motorists about heavy congestion along the route.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the association cautioned drivers travelling from Machakos Junction, commonly known as Chumvi, towards Mombasa to expect significant delays.
“Traffic Alert: From Machakos junction towards Mombasa, the jam is bumper to bumper,” the association stated.
Motorists were advised to drive carefully and consider using alternative routes where possible.
Some road users were encouraged to use the Nairobi Expressway to avoid getting caught in the traffic build-up, although sections near the accident scene remained affected by recovery operations.
The traffic disruption on Mombasa Road came as other accidents were also reported along the highway network. One such incident occurred at Mazeras in Kilifi County, involving a truck and two banana-loaded canters.
Videos from that scene showed an overturned truck lying in the middle of the road, causing concern among motorists travelling through the area.However, not all sections of the highway experienced heavy congestion.
Some motorists reported that traffic remained normal in areas such as South C, where vehicles continued moving without major delays despite the challenges being experienced further along the route.
