Several regions in Kenya are dealing with the effects of ongoing heavy rains that have caused deaths, flooding and damage to infrastructure, according to the National Police Service.
At least ten people have died in the weather-related incidents, with the Eastern region recording seven of the fatalities as rains continue across the country.
Police said in a statement issued late on Friday, May 1, that the exact circumstances of each death were still under review, but warned that risks remain high due to persistent downpours.
Infrastructure has also been affected, with two bridges reported damaged in different parts of the country, disrupting transport and cutting access for some communities.
Mwena Bridge in Kwale County in the Coast region and Ngomeni Bridge in Kitui County in the Eastern region have both been affected, according to police updates.
In Elgeyo Marakwet County, a landslide was reported in Tambach Sub-County, raising concern among residents and threatening roads and other infrastructure in the highland area.
Authorities have warned that saturated soils and continued rainfall may trigger more landslides in the coming days, as the ground remains unstable in several regions.
A separate incident has blocked a section of the Iten-Kabarnet Road near Kolol, according to the Kenya National Highways Authority.
The agency said traffic along the affected stretch has been disrupted as restoration work continues.
It advised motorists who had not yet started their journeys to use an alternative route through Iten, Eldoret, Eldama Ravine and Kabarnet. Road users were urged to exercise caution and follow instructions from police officers and traffic marshals at the site for safety.
Emergency response teams remain on the ground conducting rescue operations and working to restore access and essential services in affected areas.
Police also urged residents in high-risk areas to stay alert, avoid flooded zones and follow advisories from local officials.
The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority continues to monitor weather patterns and issue updates as the situation develops.
Authorities said coordination between agencies is ongoing as communities are encouraged to remain cautious while rainfall is expected to continue in some regions.
They said more updates will be shared as assessments continue and as response teams work to repair damaged infrastructure and support affected households.
Residents are being advised to remain cautious and follow official guidance at all times closely monitored.
