Azimio affiliate parties reject new leadership, term changes illegal

Date:

A group of affiliate parties within the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition has rejected recent leadership changes, declaring them illegal and warning of possible legal action if they are implemented.

The affiliates say the changes were made without proper consultation and violated the coalition’s rules and founding principles.

They accuse Azimio chairperson and former President Uhuru Kenyatta of overseeing a process they describe as opaque, rushed, and non-consultative. According to them, key coalition partners were excluded from discussions that led to the restructuring.

The dissenting parties are led by National Liberal Party (NLP) Secretary General Ishmael Omondi Koyoo.

They have formally written to the Registrar of Political Parties, urging the office not to effect the changes. In their letter, they insist that the resolutions submitted are “illegal, null and void” and should not be processed.

They have warned that failure to stop the process will force them to seek legal redress in court. In a strongly worded statement, the affiliates said the actions taken go against the values Azimio claims to stand for.

“The above actions go against the founding principles of inclusivity, transparency and accountability that Azimio espouses,” they said.

They added that they fully reject the resolutions and cautioned the Registrar against further processing them.

The group further accused some coalition partners of political deceit. They claimed that a meeting said to have discussed coalition affairs was held secretly and did not follow proper procedures.

According to the statement, the meeting allegedly deliberated on filling vacant positions and removing officials from the National Executive Committee and the Council without the involvement of all founding members.

They also questioned the legitimacy of the meeting itself, saying there was no proper notice and no evidence that it met the required standards.

“It is worth noting that political party coalitions are living agreements and not mere tombstones,” the affiliates stated, arguing that coalition decisions must follow agreed rules and involve all partners.

The affiliates have demanded several documents from the Registrar of Political Parties. These include the Azimio Coalition Political Party Deed of Agreement, the official status of Azimio membership as of February 1, 2026, and the notice and minutes of the meeting allegedly held on February 2, 2026.

They also want access to statutory form PP7, which relates to changes of officials, as well as the attendance list of that meeting.

The group raised concerns about how fast the leadership changes were handled. They noted that the meeting was reportedly held on February 2, 2026, the resolutions were filed with the Registrar on the same day, and the office responded immediately.

They questioned why the process moved so quickly and asked for the same speed in addressing their complaints. This dispute emerged just a day after the Azimio council communicated the leadership changes to the Registrar of Political Parties.

The council submitted meeting notices, minutes, resolutions, and statutory forms to formalise a new leadership structure as the coalition prepares for the 2027 General Election.

Under the disputed changes, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was appointed as the new Azimio coalition leader.

Suba North MP Caroli Omondi was named Secretary General, while veteran politician Philip Kisia was appointed Executive Director.

Former Secretary General Junet Mohamed and former Executive Director Raphael Tuju were removed from their positions.

The standoff now threatens to deepen divisions within Azimio at a critical time, with the coalition facing growing pressure to resolve internal disagreements ahead of the next election cycle.
