Nairobi becomes political warzone as Kalonzo denies handing seats to Gachagua’s DCP

Date:

Kalonzo Musyoka has taken a firm stand as political tension grows inside the opposition. His remarks come at a time when the United Opposition is trying to strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 elections.

Concerns had spread quickly after claims emerged suggesting that he had agreed in secret to hand over several important Nairobi seats to Rigathi Gachagua’s new Democracy for the Citizens Party.

The rumours painted a picture of a weakened coalition and raised doubts about the unity that opposition leaders have been trying to build.

Kalonzo rejected the claims immediately, calling them lies intended to confuse supporters and create mistrust during a sensitive political period.

His response was triggered by Gachagua’s public statement in which he claimed that he had reached a deal with Kalonzo.

According to Gachagua, the supposed agreement would put almost all major Nairobi positions under the control of DCP in 2027.

This included the governor’s seat, the senatorial post, and nearly all parliamentary and ward positions.

These claims caused alarm across the coalition as many wondered why Kalonzo would make such a concession. Some leaders interpreted it as an attempt by Gachagua to gain early influence in Nairobi, a county that holds huge political importance for any national contest.

Kalonzo chose to address the matter in front of residents during a Thanksgiving event in Machakos County. He told the gathering that the story being spread by Gachagua was nothing more than a political tactic.

He accused the government and its allies of pushing the narrative to make the opposition appear unstable.

He reminded supporters that unity is the key to defeating President William Ruto in 2027, and no amount of propaganda would weaken their determination.

He also made it clear that Wiper had not surrendered any seat and had not entered into any deal with DCP.

The strong reaction from Kalonzo showed that the opposition leadership is aware of how damaging such claims can be.

Nairobi remains one of the most contested political regions, and any false impression of power-sharing can easily create panic, especially among loyal supporters.

The idea that one party would hand over nearly all positions to another was viewed by many as unrealistic, yet the claims still managed to stir internal debate. Some coalition members believe Gachagua is trying to rebuild his influence by positioning DCP as a key player in Nairobi’s political future.

Despite the confusion, Kalonzo continued to deliver a message of calm. He explained that disagreements are normal in any political formation but insisted that the coalition is still strong.

He reminded leaders to avoid making statements that could mislead the public or damage trust. He also emphasised that decisions about 2027 will be made openly and collectively.

According to him, the opposition must remain focused on presenting a united front and offering Kenyans a clear alternative to the current administration.

President Ruto has often criticised the opposition for lacking concrete plans, but Kalonzo responded by saying that their goal is to allow Kenyans to decide whether they want new leadership.

He said the opposition’s mission is straightforward: remove Ruto from power through a united effort.

The latest clash between Kalonzo and Gachagua is a sign of the intense preparations already underway for the next general election. Nairobi’s political future will remain a heated subject, but Kalonzo believes the opposition has the discipline to overcome such challenges.
