Tributes flow for Sonnia Musyoka, environmental champion and founder of Kibwezi Center for Sustainability

Date:

Sonnia Nzilani Musyoka’s death has left many people in Makueni County and across the country shocked, especially those who knew her work and her strong presence in public service.

She passed away at her home, according to confirmation from her colleague, Dr. Paul Musila. News of her death spread quickly, and although she had been in the public eye for many reasons over the years, her sudden passing has brought a moment of reflection on her long and active career.

Many Kenyans first came to know her name more widely after the controversy involving her remarks linking a girl’s death to her menstrual cycle. The comments drew heavy criticism, but those who worked closely with her say that the debate overshadowed her long history of service and professional achievements. Her career stretched across several sectors, and she held different roles that shaped policy, community development, planning, and environmental management.

By the time of her death, she was serving as the County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture, and Tourism in Makueni County. She took up that position in February 2024. Before that, she had been the county minister for Lands, Urban Planning and Development, Environment, and Climate Change.

She held that post from November 2022 to February 2024, leading key programmes in land use and environmental planning.

Her leadership extended beyond county roles. Since February 2023, she chaired the Inter-County Planning Committee for the Konza Buffer Zone under the Konza Technopolis Development Authority. She also led the Makueni County Environmental Committee, where she influenced policies meant to protect natural resources and promote sustainable development.

Her passion for environmental work could also be seen in the organisation she founded in 2018, the Kibwezi Center for Sustainability, where she served as founder and chairperson.Outside government work, she had a long-standing career as a Capacity Building Consultant at Qpoint BV, a position she held from January 2016. In this role, she supported organisations by offering expertise in development, training, and strengthening institutional systems.

Her academic background was even more extensive. She was pursuing a PhD in Aquaculture at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, a programme she began in 2017.

Her education stretched across several countries and top institutions. She earned a Diploma in Education focusing on Project Management from Asean Online Education in 2021 and had predoctoral training at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2016. She also took a course in Responsible Aquaculture at Wageningen University and a postgraduate course in Marine Conservation at Duke University in 2015.

Her earlier studies included training at Western Cape University and two master’s degrees from the University of Bologna in Environmental Assessment and Management, and Water and Coastal Management.

She also studied Aquaculture Production and Management at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and took part in a short course at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education. Her academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries at Moi University from 2001 to 2005, later followed by an online course from Stanford University, where she scored 90%. Sonnia Nzilani Musyoka leaves behind a legacy of scholarship, environmental advocacy, and public service that touched many lives.
