Counsel Mungai brings eye-opening IP lessons to Mwelekeo Insights for digital creators

Date:

Mwelekeo Insights continues to shape conversations in Kenya by helping people understand issues that affect their daily lives, and one of the topics it recently explored on Mwelekeo TV is the protection of ideas.

In a new episode featuring Counsel Mwangi Mungai, the discussion centers on intellectual property and why every creator, entrepreneur, or innovator in Kenya should take these protections seriously.

Since Mwelekeo TV is a product of Mwelekeo Insights, the episode reflects the platform’s mission of giving bold and clear explanations that help the public make better decisions. Instead of using heavy legal language, the conversation breaks complex ideas into simple, relatable explanations that anyone can understand.

The episode focuses on the fact that many Kenyans are talented, creative, and full of new ideas, yet they often fail to protect their work. This leads to situations where someone builds a business, creates art, or designs a unique product, only for another person to copy it and profit without permission.

Mwelekeo Insights uses this episode to remind viewers that ideas are valuable, and protecting them can change the future of a business or side hustle. Counsel Mungai explains that intellectual property is not only for big companies ordinary Kenyans also need to secure their creativity, especially now that digital platforms make it easier for work to be copied.

One of the key points he shares is that copyright protects things like music, books, artwork, and videos.

This means that if someone creates a song or a design, they already have basic protection, but registering it makes enforcement easier.

For inventors, patents offer protection for new products, processes, or technologies.

This is especially important for Kenya’s growing startup scene, where many young innovators create unique tech solutions but fail to safeguard them. Trademarks, on the other hand, help people protect logos, business names, and brand identities. Counsel Mungai uses examples from real-life Kenyan businesses to show how a simple logo can become the heart of a brand and must therefore be protected.

Mwelekeo Insights also emphasizes that many creators lose opportunities because they assume their work is automatically protected in every country.

The episode clarifies that protection is usually territorial, meaning you must register your rights in each country where you want legal coverage.

The discussion encourages viewers to do proper searches, file applications on time, and seek legal guidance. It also introduces tools like recordation with the Anti-Counterfeit Authority, which helps reduce the spread of fake goods in the market.

To reinforce its reputation as a credible research and analysis platform, Mwelekeo Insights often supports its content with data-driven studies.

In its past research, the organization conducted an opinion poll to understand how Kenyans aged 30 and above perceive Gen Zs, especially after the political events of June 2024.

The survey examined how older generations view Gen Z influence in politics, work ethic, and cultural values. The findings revealed that while many older Kenyans appreciate the growing impact of young people, misunderstandings between the generations still exist.

Even so, the research also showed opportunities for cooperation, with about 77% of respondents agreeing that Gen Zs are highly politically aware while 23% are unable, a strong indication that younger voices are increasingly recognized as informed and influential in national conversations.
