How a 56-year-old attacker breached State House and left one officer dead

Date:

A sense of alarm filled the air in Nairobi on Monday morning after an unexpected attack at State House left a General Service Unit officer dead.

The incident, which happened at Gate D, a key checkpoint within one of Kenya’s most protected areas, triggered a brief but tense lockdown as security personnel rushed to contain the situation. The attacker, identified only as a 56-year-old man named Kithuka, reportedly struck with a bow and arrow, fatally injuring Police Constable Ramadhan Mattanka, who was stationed at the gate during the assault.

According to reports from the scene, the officer was quickly taken to Kenyatta National Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The tragic event shocked many within the security ranks and raised serious questions about how a civilian managed to breach such a highly secured area.

Sources confirmed that President William Ruto was within the compound when the attack occurred, prompting immediate reinforcement and temporary lockdown procedures as guards secured all access points.

Witnesses say the man had approached the gate earlier, pretending to be part of a street family and carrying a large sack that concealed the weapon. Officers at the gate became suspicious and refused him entry.

However, instead of leaving, he lingered nearby, waiting for an opportunity to strike. When officers momentarily turned their attention to a vehicle entering the premises, he launched his attack without warning, firing an arrow that struck Constable Mattanka.

The situation was brought under control within minutes as nearby GSU officers subdued the attacker before he could cause further harm. The rapid reaction by the security team prevented what could have become a wider security threat inside the compound. The attacker was arrested and taken into custody for interrogation.

Investigators believe that the incident may have been premeditated, given the precision and timing of the assault.

In a statement, the National Police Service condemned the act, describing it as “heinous and senseless.” The statement also praised the officers at the scene for their bravery and swift response, which helped prevent more casualties.

Security agencies have since launched a detailed investigation to uncover the suspect’s motive and how he managed to get so close to a restricted zone while armed.

The loss of Constable Mattanka has drawn sympathy from fellow officers and members of the public, with many calling for stricter screening procedures at all State House gates. The investigation continues as authorities seek to determine whether the suspect acted alone or had any links to organized groups.
