Natembeya warns of Ruto-sponsored projects as opposition gears up for 2027

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has brought fresh attention to the growing tensions within Kenya’s political scene as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a television interview on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, he made it clear that the opposition will not sit back quietly while internal divisions weaken their unity.

He stated that the opposition is already aware of moves being made to interfere with its strength and will soon reveal the identities of those allegedly linked to the government’s side.

According to him, such revelations are necessary to protect the integrity of the opposition and ensure Kenyans know who is truly committed to change. He explained that the opposition will treat anyone attempting to hold it at ransom with great caution, making it clear that betrayal will not be tolerated.

Drawing from Kenya’s political history, Natembeya compared the current situation with the era of former President Daniel Arap Moi, when divisions within the opposition repeatedly handed victory to the ruling side.

He insisted that such mistakes cannot be repeated if the opposition expects to mount a serious challenge in 2027. For him, unity is not just an option but a requirement if the opposition is to be taken seriously by Kenyans.

Natembeya put it more directly when he said, “Tutatangaza wagombea ambao watakuwa projects kwa Wakenya. Ukweli wa mambo ni kwamba, ikifika 2027, kutakuwa na upande wa serikali na opposition.”

He stressed that common sense dictates that a united government candidate against a fractured opposition will only lead to defeat, remarking, “Common sense inasema ya kwamba, upande wa serikali ikiwa na mtu mmoja na nyinyi kwa opposition mnaongea na sauti tano, mtashindwa tu.”

These words underlined his warning that disunity only plays into the hands of the ruling side.

During the same interview, Natembeya also touched on the role of Raila Odinga, the long-serving leader of the Orange Democratic Movement. His words suggested that Raila remains an important figure despite questions about some of his past political moves.

He noted, “Kama Raila atakuja ajaribu na tuone ni yeye, why not. Kama atakuja na atuelezee kwa nini alikuwa ameenda ule upande mwingine wa serikali, tutamskiza.”

This statement reflected a willingness to listen, showing that Odinga’s relevance in opposition politics cannot be dismissed.

Natembeya concluded by insisting that loyalty to the opposition cause will be the true measure of leadership going forward. He warned that government-sponsored candidates might emerge as a strategy to destabilize the opposition, but reassured Kenyans that such individuals will not remain hidden.

His remarks come at a time when political realignments are already visible, with both the government and the opposition preparing their strategies for what promises to be a fierce 2027 presidential race. The message from Natembeya was clear, the opposition must unite, expose betrayal, and present one strong voice if they are to stand a real chance against the government.
