Mystery surrounds death of construction worker found at Talanta Sports Stadium

Date:

The discovery of a construction worker’s body at the Talanta Sports Stadium in Nairobi has raised many questions. The man, identified as 35-year-old Sammy Kyengo, had been missing for a week before his remains were found on Saturday morning.

His family and colleagues are now left searching for answers about what could have happened to him and why his life ended in such a tragic way.

Sammy was reported missing on September 6 by his wife, Christine, after he failed to return home and his phone went offline.

A week later, his lifeless body was discovered floating in a water sump behind the terraces of the stadium, which is still under construction. The grim discovery was made by a fellow worker at around 9 a.m. as he was preparing the site for plastering.

The shock of finding a colleague in such a state spread quickly across the site, leaving workers shaken and fearful. Investigators who arrived at the scene confirmed that Kyengo had visible injuries on the back of his head and neck.

Blood was also seen coming from his nose and mouth, raising suspicions that his death may not have been accidental. His phone, which had gone offline the day he disappeared, has not been traced, adding more mystery to the case.

The body was later moved to the Nairobi Funeral Home for preservation as detectives wait for an autopsy to reveal the exact cause of death.

Christine, his widow, revealed that her husband had been struggling with frustrations over unpaid wages before he went missing. She said that Sammy had told her the company had not paid them since July, and he wanted to confront the matter and possibly quit the job.

These words now carry heavier meaning for her, as she wonders whether his frustrations could have played a role in his death.

His colleagues described him as a peaceful man with no known disputes. Ivan Bongo, one of the workers at the stadium, voiced the fears of many when he said they no longer felt safe working at the site.

“If one of us can disappear and end up dead inside the stadium, in whose hands are we safe?” he asked.

The statement reflects the anxiety that has now gripped workers who continue to question the circumstances surrounding their friend’s death.

For the family, the loss has brought emotional and financial strain. His nephew, Paul Kioko, who depended on Sammy for school fees and rent, now feels uncertain about his future.

“He has been supporting me with school fees and rent. I don’t know how I will manage now,” Paul said, showing how deeply the death has affected those close to him.

Following the discovery, workers were instructed not to report to the stadium site on Saturday as investigations continue. The case has left more questions than answers, and many are waiting to see whether justice will be served for a man whose life seems to have ended under unclear and painful circumstances.
