Sakaja faces toughest political battle as over 90 MCAs move to oust him

Date:

A fresh battle has emerged in Nairobi politics as Members of the County Assembly move to send Governor Johnson Sakaja home.

The anger within the assembly has been growing for months, with complaints that the governor has failed to deliver on the most basic expectations of city residents.

The latest move by more than 90 MCAs signals a loss of patience with Sakaja’s leadership and exposes the deep frustrations that have been boiling among both the opposition and government sides.

The MCAs accuse Sakaja of incompetence, arrogance, and ignoring critical development needs in the wards.

For many months, projects that were meant to improve roads, drainage, and public services have been left incomplete, leaving residents to struggle with poor infrastructure and services.

This has left ward representatives exposed to backlash from the public, who blame them for failing to deliver even though resources have been allocated.

In their view, Sakaja has failed to provide the leadership required to turn allocations into tangible results.

The decision to move forward with impeachment came after a tense Speaker’s Kamkunji chaired by Ken Ngondi. It was during this meeting that leaders from both ODM and UDA expressed their dissatisfaction.

For many, it was no longer about political rivalry but about survival and accountability. Nairobi South B MCA Chege Waithera revealed that 96 members attended the session, well above the numbers needed to begin the process.

She insisted that the resolution was unanimous and that residents had already made their frustrations clear through constant complaints about stalled projects.

Roysambu MCA Sospeter Wamumbi went further, saying that MCAs would not risk their political futures by defending a governor who had lost touch with the people.

According to him, Sakaja has remained distant from the ordinary challenges that city dwellers face, preferring instead to focus on personal political maneuvering.

This sentiment was echoed by Nairobi CBD MCA Mwaniki Kwenya, who claimed that Sakaja has been undermining elected leaders by working with their opponents in preparation for 2027.

Such actions, they argued, were evidence of arrogance and a lack of respect for the assembly. This is not the first time Sakaja has faced the threat of removal.

Past petitions and attempts failed either due to political interference or lack of numbers. However, the unity being shown by both ODM and UDA MCAs paints a different picture this time.

The plan to retreat to Naivasha to start collecting signatures shows the seriousness of the move, and for the first time, Sakaja’s position as Nairobi governor looks extremely shaky.

With MCAs now determined to push the process forward, the governor is staring at his toughest political challenge yet, one that could end his tenure prematurely and leave his political ambitions in tatters.
