Faith Kipyegon shatters records in Silesia with a historic 3000m run

Date:

Faith Kipyegon once again proved why she is one of the greatest middle-distance runners of all time after a breathtaking performance at the Silesia Diamond League on Saturday, August 16, 2025, in Chorzow, Poland.

The Kenyan star stormed to victory in the women’s 3000m, clocking a remarkable 8:07.04, a time that broke several records in one race and pushed the limits of what many thought possible.

The 31-year-old ran with her usual composure and determination, finishing just a second short of the long-standing world record set by China’s Junxia Wang in 1993 at 8:06.11.

Despite the hot and demanding conditions in Silesia, Kipyegon held her pace and produced a strong finish in the final lap that almost saw her rewrite the world record books. Until this moment, no athlete had come so close to Wang’s record in over three decades.Earlier in May, her fellow Kenyan Beatrice Chebet had set the fastest 3000m time since Wang’s mark, running 8:11.56 at the Rabat Diamond League.

Chebet later stunned the athletics world again by breaking the 5000m world record at the Prefontaine Classic, becoming the first woman ever to run under 14 minutes with a time of 13:58.06.

Kipyegon’s latest performance added more excitement to this new golden era for Kenyan women in distance running.Kipyegon’s winning run in Silesia earned her the African Record, Kenyan National Record, Diamond League Record, and her own Personal Best. Beyond the statistics, the result highlighted her continued dominance across multiple distances.

She has already conquered the 1500m and 5000m with world records, and now the 3000m bears her mark too. For many fans, she has firmly established herself as the most complete female middle-distance runner of her generation.

The rest of the field could only watch her brilliance from a distance. Ethiopia’s Likina Amebaw came second in 8:34.53, followed by her compatriot Aleshigh Baweke in 8:35.51.

Australia’s Rose Davies clocked 8:36.53 for fourth place, with Maureen Koster of the Netherlands just behind in 8:36.71. The times reflected just how far ahead Kipyegon was on the day. Before this race, her personal best over 3000m was 8:23.55, a mark she set in 2014.

Improving that time by 16 seconds after more than a decade shows not only her exceptional ability but also her longevity at the very top of the sport.

Just weeks earlier, she had attempted to break another barrier in Paris running a mile in under four minutes. In that special “Breaking4” event, she recorded 4:06.42, faster than her official world record but not eligible due to technical regulations.

Although she narrowly missed the goal, her effort drew global attention and reminded the world of her relentless pursuit of greatness. Speaking after that race, Kipyegon said, “I have proven that it is possible. If it is not me, it will be somebody else. I will not lose hope.” Those words now carry even more weight as she continues to inspire through performances that redefine what is possible in middle-distance running.
