Kaluma sides with government, warns youth against protests without offering solutions

Date:

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has made it clear that allies of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will not take part in any protests against the government.

In a direct message posted on his official social media account on June 19, 2025, Kaluma warned the opposition not to mislead young Kenyans into joining street demonstrations.

He said that those supporting the government would remain firm in backing the current leadership and would not be swayed by calls to take to the streets.

Kaluma went further to say that the Luo community will not be pushed into joining protests which, according to him, do not have a clear reason or goal.

He said that people from the region had suffered enough in past political fights, often being used as pawns in battles that only benefited a few individuals. He explained that many young people from his community had paid a heavy price, including arrests, injuries, and even deaths, while the leaders pushing for protests stayed safe and continued to enjoy support from donors.

Kaluma explained that many of the former opposition supporters are now more focused on being part of the government and helping in national development.

He said that it is no longer helpful to be dragged into endless protests that bring no progress. He stressed that real change comes from working with the government and playing a role in shaping policies, not through constant demonstrations that disturb peace and cause destruction.

He strongly criticized opposition leaders who incite protests and use donor money for personal gain while not taking part in the street actions themselves. He called it unfair and dishonest for such leaders to send poor and jobless youth to face police on the streets while they stay at home.

Kaluma asked the public to refuse being part of what he described as a scam where only a few people gain while the masses suffer. He even challenged the opposition leaders to lead protests themselves, with their own children in front, if they truly believe in what they are calling for.

Kaluma added that the Luo community has a long history of protest and struggle, dating back to independence. He said it is now time to focus on peace, governance, and building the nation instead of going backwards through unnecessary demonstrations.

His remarks come just as fears grow about possible new protests set to happen in Nairobi and other towns on June 25, to mark one year since the Gen Z protests.
