A police officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ Anti-Narcotics Unit is being held in custody after investigators linked him to a robbery involving Ksh60 million that was being transported across the country.
The officer was arrested on July 22 and later presented before the Limuru Law Courts, where prosecutors requested permission to detain him for 14 days as investigations continue.
The court directed that he remain in custody at Lari Police Station in Kiambu County until July 27, when a ruling will be made on whether the detention period should be extended.
In her directions, Justice Brenda Ofisi allowed investigators to continue with their inquiries while the suspect remains in custody.
The court noted that further directions on the detention application would be issued during the next mention of the case.
According to investigators, the officer is suspected of being part of a group that allegedly planned and carried out the theft of Ksh60 million belonging to a company.
Detectives claim the money was being transported from Nairobi to Migori by two employees on the night of June 29.Court documents indicate that the employees left Nairobi at around 9pm in a private vehicle carrying the cash.
Along the way, they were reportedly intercepted by armed men travelling in three vehicles whose registration plates had been concealed.
Investigators say the attackers, believed to have been armed with AK-47 rifles, overpowered the two workers before taking the cash. The suspects are also accused of stealing mobile phones valued at about Ksh65,000.
After the incident, the victims were reportedly abandoned along Mai Mahiu Road.
The investigating team told the court that early findings linked one of the stolen mobile phones to the detained DCI officer on the day the robbery took place.
This discovery is said to have formed part of the evidence that led to his arrest.
Detectives further suspect that the operation may have involved other police officers. Some of the individuals involved in the robbery are alleged to have worn police uniforms, raising concerns that the crime may have been carried out with the assistance of people familiar with law enforcement procedures.
Investigators have also informed the court that they plan to search properties associated with the suspects in Nyeri and Bungoma counties.
The searches are aimed at recovering the stolen money, firearms and any other items that may assist with the investigation.
Meanwhile, two other suspects who were earlier arrested in connection with the case are expected to appear in court on July 27 for further directions.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to establish the full circumstances surrounding the robbery and identify all those involved.
