Kenyans to enjoy midweek holiday as government announces Eid-ul-Adha break

Date:

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has officially declared Wednesday, May 27, 2026, a public holiday to allow Muslims across the country to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha, one of the most important festivals in the Islamic calendar.

The announcement was made through a Gazette notice issued on Monday, May 25, by the Interior Ministry.

The declaration means Kenyans will enjoy a midweek break as Muslim faithful gather with family, friends, and communities to mark the religious occasion through prayers, charitable acts, and celebrations.

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is observed by Muslims around the world after the completion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.

The festival holds deep religious meaning in Islam as it remembers the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command before God provided a ram as a substitute.

During the celebrations, many Muslim families slaughter animals such as goats, sheep, or cows and share the meat with relatives, neighbors, and those in need as a sign of compassion and unity.

Because Islamic holidays follow the lunar calendar, the exact dates of celebrations can vary each year depending on the sighting of the moon. For this reason, the government usually issues an official notice every year to confirm the holiday date.

The announcement is expected to be welcomed by many Muslims across the country who have been preparing for the celebrations.

Religious leaders often encourage worshippers to use the period to strengthen family ties, promote peace, and support vulnerable members of society.

The holiday also provides many Kenyans with an opportunity to take a short break from work and daily routines. Some families are expected to travel upcountry or visit loved ones during the one-day holiday, while businesses in some towns may experience increased activity as people shop for food, clothing, and other items ahead of the celebrations.

Eid-ul-Adha remains one of the major religious events observed globally and continues to bring together Muslim communities in prayer, reflection, and acts of generosity.
