Bare Sahara Ahmed arrested as DCI warns against divisive online content

Date:

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested a suspect linked to a viral social media video said to contain remarks likely to undermine national cohesion.

The arrest follows investigations launched after the video began circulating online, raising concern over the nature and intent of the statements made.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the DCI said Bare Sahara Ahmed was taken into custody after investigators reviewed the video and carried out inquiries into the matter.

According to the agency, the probe focused on establishing the context of the remarks and whether they could amount to incitement or threaten peaceful coexistence.

The suspect is currently being held in lawful custody and is undergoing processing ahead of being presented in court.

The DCI said the case is being handled through the legal process as investigations continue.

The agency used the occasion to remind the public that while freedom of expression is protected under the Constitution, it must be exercised responsibly and within the limits of the law.

It noted that speech or actions that may promote division, hatred or unrest can have serious consequences and may attract legal action.

The DCI further warned against statements that could incite communities against one another or threaten national unity.

It said such matters would be dealt with firmly in line with the law, stressing the importance of protecting peace and social harmony.

The agency also urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid sharing content that may be inflammatory or misleading, especially on social media platforms where information can spread quickly. It called on Kenyans to use online spaces responsibly and avoid actions that could heighten tensions.

The arrest comes at a time when authorities have continued to monitor misuse of digital platforms, particularly where online content is seen as capable of causing unrest or deepening divisions. Investigators have in recent months increased scrutiny on material shared online that may pose a threat to public order.

The DCI maintained that its actions are aimed at safeguarding national cohesion and ensuring that public discourse remains peaceful and responsible.
