Journalist recounts frightening encounter as police operation in Kikuyu turns chaotic

Date:

An NTV journalist has reported a disturbing encounter involving police officers during an operation to disperse a crowd in Kikuyu Town earlier today, raising fresh concerns about the conduct of security forces during public order incidents.

According to NTV reporter David Muthoka, the NTV news crew came under direct threat when officers particularly those described as plainclothes personnel allegedly used excessive force while dispersing demonstrators or bystanders in the area.

Muthoka stated that officers “indiscriminately fired tear gas canisters,” some of which allegedly landed dangerously close to or inside the journalists’ vehicle.

He further claimed that at least one canister landed inside the car where he was seated at the back.He added that the situation could have been far worse had there been any delay in reacting to the device.

The journalist also reported that one tear gas canister allegedly exploded near the front of the vehicle, shattering the windscreen.

The crew reportedly had to endure further threats as officers passed by, with claims that weapons were pointed in their direction.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Makau, is said to be deeply shaken by the incident.

Despite the intensity of the situation, the crew confirmed that no one sustained physical injuries. However, Muthoka emphasized the psychological toll of the encounter.

The incident adds to ongoing concerns about the safety of journalists covering public order situations in Kenya.

Media organizations have previously raised alarm over repeated exposure of reporters to tear gas, physical intimidation, and obstruction while carrying out their duties.

The affected crew works under NTV Kenya, a major Kenyan broadcaster operated by the Nation Media Group, both of which have frequently documented protests, security operations, and civic unrest across the country.

Kikuyu Town, Kenya, located in Kiambu County, has seen periodic tensions during demonstrations and law enforcement operations in recent years, often drawing media presence due to its proximity to Nairobi and its role as a key commuter and residential hub.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the allegations.

The claims remain based on the account provided by the journalist and have not been independently verified at the time of publication.
