Whistleblowers expose deep crisis in cricket Kenya with Dubai deals and match-fixing links

Date:

Kenyan cricket is facing a storm that goes beyond the pitch, with whistleblowers exposing worrying claims of dysfunction, corruption, and misconduct at the heart of Cricket Kenya.

What is coming out paints a picture of an institution in deep crisis, where decision-making has been undermined by legal battles, resignations, and questionable leadership.

This vacuum of authority has reportedly allowed outsiders with self-interests to exploit the sport and weaken its credibility.Insiders within the federation say they are exhausted after years of trying to build opportunities for players and communities, only to see the game reduced to a playground for shadowy deals.

They point to questionable partnerships, clandestine agreements, and commercial arrangements that raise serious concerns about whether the game is being run in the interests of players or for the profit of a small group.

These insiders have now taken their concerns to the International Cricket Council, urging the global body to step in and conduct a forensic investigation into the affairs of Cricket Kenya. One of the central issues raised is a partnership with a newly registered company in Dubai, established earlier this year, whose financial background and competence remain unclear.

Cricket official Vijay Barate (circled) who was previously flagged by the BCCI for match-fixing and Director of Sports Jaxon Indakwa are mentioned in ongoing reports of governance and financial misconduct in Kenyan cricket.

Whistleblowers argue this deal was pushed forward without full board approval and instead relied on the influence of a single official.

To make matters worse, the company is said to be linked to Vijay Barate, a figure who has previously been flagged for involvement in match-fixing by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Reports indicate that Barate signed a memorandum of understanding with a Cricket Kenya representative, further fueling fears of match manipulation and financial abuse.

The governance of Cricket Kenya itself is described as fragile and chaotic. Leadership positions remain contested, many office bearers have either resigned or been suspended, and some fiduciary roles are being handled by individuals whose authority is under litigation.

This dysfunction, whistleblowers say, has created the perfect environment for corrupt actors to introduce shady agreements, channel funds to unknown entities, and open the door for bookmakers to gain a foothold in Kenyan cricket.

Adding to the turmoil are allegations that senior state sports officials, including those linked to the Harmonization Committee, have been complicit in the mismanagement.

More than 120 million shillings is alleged to have been diverted under arrangements facilitated by the Director of Sports, Mr. Indakwa, who has been described by insiders as central to the scandal. It does not stop at financial mismanagement. Whistleblowers claim cases of sexual misconduct, including sodomy, have been brushed aside within the organization, leaving victims without justice and sustaining a toxic culture of silence.

This, combined with financial scandals, risks eroding public trust, discouraging sponsors, and making parents hesitant to let their children pursue cricket.

The plea to the ICC outlines urgent actions, including verifying the credentials of the foreign partner, assessing whether Cricket Kenya meets proper governance standards, and launching a full investigation into the alleged corruption and misconduct.

Without these steps, insiders warn that the sport’s future in the country is at risk, with young athletes left vulnerable and the integrity of matches compromised.

The situation now puts the spotlight firmly on both Kenyan cricket administrators and the international body.

Their response will determine whether the sport can recover and return to a path of transparency, fairness, and proper development, or whether it will remain entangled in corruption and manipulation that benefits a few while destroying the dreams of many.
