“There was no shooting that night,’ Police Inspector Adamson Bungei denies police shooting claims

Date:

The former Nairobi regional police boss, Adamson Bungei, has strongly denied allegations that police officers were involved in the shooting and killing of young people during the “Gen Z” protests that occurred between June and July of last year, 2024.

Inspector Bungei, who was providing clarifications before the court, stated that the police officers were not deployed in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) as many have claimed.

He emphasized that the officers were simply carrying out their daily routines and performing their usual operations during that time.

This statement was made in response to widespread accusations that law enforcement played a role in the violence that erupted during the protests, which were largely led by young activists demanding social and political reforms.

One of the most contentious issues during the protests was the death of Rex Maasai, a prominent Gen Z activist. Inspector Bungei addressed this matter by stating that there was no operational order in place at the time Maasai was shot and killed.

He explained that various security agencies had responded to the situation in an effort to prevent further crisis and maintain order. However, due to the absence of a specific operational order, Bungei claimed that it was impossible to trace the officer responsible for Maasai’s death.

This lack of accountability has fueled public outrage and skepticism, with many questioning the transparency and integrity of the police force during the protests.

The “Gen Z” protests, which gained significant attention both locally and internationally, were marked by widespread demonstrations, clashes with law enforcement, and calls for justice.

Young people took to the streets to voice their frustrations over issues such as unemployment, corruption, and police brutality.

The protests were largely peaceful, but tensions escalated, leading to violent confrontations and, tragically, loss of life.

The death of Rex Maasai became a symbol of the movement, with many demanding answers and accountability from the authorities.Inspector Bungei’s statements have done little to quell the growing discontent among the public.

Many remain unconvinced by his explanations, particularly given the lack of clarity surrounding the circumstances of Maasai’s death.

Critics argue that the police force has a responsibility to ensure the safety of all citizens, including protesters, and that any use of force must be justified and transparent.

The failure to identify the officer involved in Maasai’s shooting has only deepened the mistrust between the public and law enforcement.

As the court proceedings continue, the families of those affected by the violence, as well as the broader public, are calling for a thorough and impartial investigation into the events of the “Gen Z” protests.

They seek justice for the lives lost and accountability for those responsible. The case has highlighted the urgent need for police reform and greater transparency in handling such situations to prevent future tragedies and restore public confidence in the justice system.
