Seven people from the same village have died after a matatu carrying them to a dowry ceremony plunged into a gorge at Inyoni Village in Makueni County.
The passengers were travelling together for the family occasion when the vehicle lost control while navigating the hilly area. It veered off the road and plunged into the gorge, turning what was expected to be a day of celebration into a painful loss for the families involved.
Makueni County Health Chief Officer Dr Harvey Mulei said 37 other passengers were injured in the crash.
Medical teams responded to the scene and provided emergency care before the injured passengers were taken for further treatment.
The deaths have left the affected village mourning several members of the community at the same time. Families that had expected to gather for a dowry ceremony are now dealing with the loss of their relatives and friends.
The passengers had set out for what was supposed to be an important family event. Such ceremonies often bring together relatives, friends and members of the wider community, making the journey an important part of the occasion.
However, the trip ended before they could reach their destination. The vehicle lost control on the difficult stretch of road before leaving the road and landing in the gorge.
The exact cause of the crash had not been established at the time of reporting. Traffic investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the accident and establish why the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Among the issues that may need to be examined are the condition of the road, the mechanical state of the matatu, the driver’s conduct and the challenges presented by the hilly terrain.
Investigators may also need to establish whether the vehicle had complied with the required safety regulations before carrying the passengers.
The driver’s qualifications, working hours and the vehicle’s inspection records could form part of the investigation.
The crash comes amid continued concern over road safety in Kenya, where passenger vehicles are regularly involved in serious accidents. Makueni and other parts of southeastern Kenya have experienced several fatal crashes in the past, with difficult terrain and road conditions among the issues that can make some stretches challenging for motorists.
Public service vehicles carry large numbers of passengers every day, many of whom have little control over how safely a journey is conducted once they board. This makes responsible driving, proper vehicle maintenance and compliance with traffic regulations important in preventing avoidable crashes.
Authorities will now be expected to establish what happened at Inyoni Village and determine whether any safety measures could have prevented the accident.
If investigators find that negligence or a breach of safety rules contributed to the crash, appropriate action should follow.
For the injured passengers, the immediate focus remains on treatment and recovery. Dr Mulei said the 37 injured passengers were stabilised by medical teams following the accident.For the families of the seven people who died, however, the loss cannot be reversed.
They had left their village expecting to take part in a family celebration, but instead, they are now preparing to mourn their loved ones.
The tragedy has also affected the wider community, which must now come to terms with losing several villagers in one accident.
