Senator Richard Onyonka calls for experts in foreign affairs to strengthen Kenya’s geopolitical stand

Date:

Senator Richard Onyonka has emphasized the need for Kenya to strengthen its Ministry of Foreign Affairs by appointing experts to key positions, arguing that the country’s global and continental influence depends on well-informed diplomatic strategies.

His comments come after Raila Odinga’s unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, an outcome that has raised questions about Kenya’s diplomatic efforts and overall foreign policy approach.

Onyonka pointed out that Kenya’s foreign policy decisions directly affect its standing in both regional and global politics. He stressed that appointing professionals with deep knowledge of international relations is crucial for Kenya to effectively engage with other nations and secure important leadership roles in global organizations.

According to him, the failure to secure the AUC chairmanship should serve as a wake-up call for the government to reassess how it conducts diplomacy.

The senator’s concerns reflect a broader debate among political leaders and analysts about whether Kenya’s diplomatic strategies are strong enough to position the country as a leading force in Africa.

Odinga, who was backed by President William Ruto’s administration for the AUC position, did not receive the expected level of support from African heads of state. This has led to speculation that Kenya’s diplomatic lobbying may not have been effective, raising doubts about the country’s ability to influence key decisions on the continent.

Onyonka argued that Kenya’s approach to diplomacy should not be limited to political interests but should also focus on economic growth, security, and international partnerships.

He stated that a well-structured Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by professionals with experience in international negotiations, could help the country secure stronger alliances and economic benefits.

In his view, Kenya cannot afford to rely on political appointments alone when handling matters that require technical expertise and strategic planning.

Beyond the AUC race, Onyonka highlighted the need for Kenya to invest in long-term diplomatic strategies that go beyond short-term political gains. He emphasized that global influence is built over time through consistent engagement, credibility, and professionalism.

Kenya, he said, must learn from its recent diplomatic failures and focus on strengthening its foreign affairs ministry to ensure the country remains competitive on the global stage.

His remarks have added to the growing conversation about the need for Kenya to rethink its foreign policy and diplomatic engagements. With increasing competition for leadership roles in international institutions, many believe that Kenya must do more to secure strategic positions that will benefit the country both politically and economically.

As Onyonka pointed out, the key to success in global politics lies in expertise, proper planning, and a well-structured diplomatic approach that serves the country’s long-term interests.
