Residents blame negligence for endless tragedies at Magadi road death trap

Date:

The residents of Ongata Rongai are once again speaking out about the growing danger along a stretch of Magadi Road that has turned into a major blackspot, claiming lives and leaving many injured.

The problem lies in a section just past Multimedia University, straddling the border of Nairobi and Kajiado counties, which locals now refer to as a death trap. A deep ditch on the roadside has over time become a hazard that traps vehicles, while the area’s steep slope and curve make it even more dangerous, especially for drivers unfamiliar with the terrain.

Over the past two months alone, three accidents have been reported at the same spot, all involving vehicles that veered off the road and toppled into the ditch.

The most recent one took place on a Sunday evening when a 14-seater matatu and a private car lost control and plunged into the ditch. According to witnesses, the matatu driver swerved sharply to avoid hitting the car ahead, but the move ended tragically as both vehicles crashed into the ditch.

Passengers on board the matatu were heading to Rongai town when the accident happened, and several of them sustained serious injuries. Emergency responders, assisted by officers from Rongai Police Station, rushed the injured to Sinai Hospital.

Both vehicles were badly damaged by the impact of the fall.Residents who arrived at the scene moments later were left frustrated not just by the repeated accidents but also by the conduct of a few bystanders who took advantage of the chaos to steal valuables from the victims instead of helping with rescue efforts.

Such incidents have deepened the sense of anger among the community, who say they have been crying out for help for years but their pleas continue to fall on deaf ears.

Many believe the cause of these recurring accidents is poor road design and lack of proper signage, which make it difficult for motorists to navigate the slope, especially at night or during rainy weather.

In August, a similar incident near the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) bus stop caused a heavy traffic jam after a passenger bus plunged into a ditch. The bus, which was reportedly overlapping, overturned but fortunately no lives were lost.

However, the situation has not always ended that way. In September last year, eight people were killed when a 32-seater Naboka Sacco bus veered off the same road and plunged into the Mbagathi River near Gataka.

The bus driver, who was among the dead, lost control while approaching the Cooperative University of Kenya.

These repeated tragedies have sparked outrage and protests, particularly from university students who use the road daily. In March, students from Multimedia University held demonstrations that paralyzed transport along Magadi Road for hours after one of their fellow students died in a crash at the same spot.

The students lit bonfires and clashed with police, demanding immediate government intervention to fix the dangerous section.

Despite these protests and the recurring accidents, little has been done to address the problem.

Locals say temporary repairs are occasionally made, but no long-term measures have been implemented. Many now fear that unless the government steps in to redesign the road, improve signage, and construct barriers along the ditch, the area will continue to claim more lives. What was once a simple stretch of road has now turned into a symbol of negligence and frustration for the people of Ongata Rongai who travel it daily, never sure if they will reach home safely.
