President William Ruto’s newly appointed IEBC Selection Panel was officially sworn in on 27th January 2025 at a ceremony held at the Supreme Court in Nairobi.
The event was presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome, who made a powerful statement to the panel members, urging them to maintain the highest levels of integrity and professionalism in their roles.
She reminded them of the immense responsibility they have to identify individuals who can restore trust and confidence in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In her address, the Chief Justice highlighted the critical role the panel members will play in shaping Kenya’s electoral future.
She stressed the importance of ensuring that the electoral process remains transparent, credible, and trusted by all Kenyans.
According to her, the panel must select individuals of high moral standing, as these individuals will directly influence the integrity of the country’s elections and democratic processes.
The newly appointed panel members are Kiome Lindah Gakii, Prof. Oloo Adams, James Evans Misati, Nicodemus Kipchirchir Bore, Ambassador Koki Muli Grignon, Carolene Kituku, Tanui Andrew Kipkoech, Dr. Nelson Makanda, and Fatuma Saman.
These appointees were officially listed in Gazette Notice No. 715 and will oversee the recruitment of the IEBC Chairperson and Members.
Their appointment comes after the previous panel was dissolved under Gazette Notice No. 2641 of 2023.
The panel’s role is critical, as it will select individuals who will have the responsibility of managing the electoral processes in Kenya.
This includes overseeing the running of elections, ensuring they are free and fair, and maintaining the public’s confidence in the election results.
Given the challenges that the IEBC has faced in the past, including allegations of irregularities in previous elections, the new panel’s task is not only important but also highly sensitive.
They will need to ensure that the process is transparent and free of influence, fostering a sense of security among the electorate. The selection of the IEBC leadership is a crucial aspect of Kenya’s democracy.
The members of the new panel are aware of the weight of the responsibility they now carry. The public will be watching closely to see if they can restore the confidence that many have lost in the electoral process.
As the country heads towards future elections, the panel’s work will have a lasting impact on the political sphere, making their role in the recruitment of the IEBC leadership vital for the country’s democratic health.
