Political Ringside opens the floor on youth influence and party decision making

Date:

Youth leagues in Kenyan political parties have little real influence despite the large number of young voters in the country. This was the main concern raised during a recent episode of Political Ringside, where Chibeka Matara, Chairperson of the KANU Youth Congress, spoke to host Fridah Mong’are about the limited role young people play in key party decisions.

Chibeka explained that most political parties in Kenya have youth leagues because their constitutions require them to do so.

On paper, these structures are meant to ensure that young members are represented from the grassroots level to the national office. In reality, however, youth leagues often become active only during campaign periods.

Young members are mobilized to attend rallies, spread party messages, and organize support on the ground. Once elections are over, their voices are rarely heard when serious decisions are being made.

He pointed out that major negotiations, especially those involving coalitions or leadership positions, are usually handled by senior party officials.

These leaders meet, agree on strategies, and share positions without involving youth representatives. After deals are made, young members are expected to support the outcomes without question. According to Chibeka, this pattern is not limited to one party but is common across the political scene.

This situation creates frustration because youth make up more than 75 percent of Kenya’s voters. Their numbers and energy help parties win elections, yet after victories, many feel sidelined.

Positions that are meant to represent young people sometimes go to older individuals. As a result, some youth feel they are only useful during campaign season and forgotten afterward.

The discussion also looked at how coalitions are formed in Kenya. Many alliances are built for convenience, such as gaining more seats or accessing resources. Shared values and ideology are often not the main focus. When parties change direction or join new alliances without proper explanation, young supporters can feel betrayed, especially if they joined because they believed in certain principles.

Chibeka noted that recent events, including the 2024 protests, show that young people are becoming more aware and vocal.

There is growing demand for accountability and genuine inclusion. Still, many challenges remain, as old habits of concentrating power among a few leaders continue.

The conversation stressed the need for reform within parties. Youth leagues could be given formal voting rights in major decisions, including coalition agreements.

Parties could also ensure that more young people hold meaningful executive positions. This would strengthen internal democracy and protect party identity.

Chibeka encouraged young Kenyans to remain engaged throughout the political cycle, not just during elections. He expressed hope that consistent participation will eventually lead to a system where youth are not only present but truly influential in shaping the country’s future.

For those who want deeper insights into such conversations and honest discussions about the state of Kenyan politics, tuning in to Political Ringside, widely regarded as one of the top political shows in the country, offers a valuable platform to stay informed and engaged.
