Political Ringside discusses Edwin Sifuna’s ODM position with youth leader Cyphrine Wanyama

Date:

The discussion on the removal of Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement has opened fresh debate in Kenyan politics, and this topic was carefully examined on Political Ringside, a political show that focuses on current affairs and party dynamics.

In this episode, the host Kelvin Waswa sat down with Cyphrine Wanyama, who is a youth leader in ODM and the Organizing Secretary in Langata.

Their conversation stayed focused on the party, the reasons behind the decision, and what it could mean going forward.

The show looked closely at the events that followed a recent ODM meeting held in Mombasa.

During that meeting, questions were raised about the role of Edwin Sifuna and the benefits he had gained from the party over time.

Cyphrine Wanyama explained that while there has been talk of his removal, Sifuna is still considered the Secretary General for now.

Any final decision must be approved at the National Delegates Conference scheduled for March 17.

This, he said, is part of following the party constitution and not acting outside the rules.

A key part of the discussion on Political Ringside was whether the National Executive Committee followed the correct process.

According to Wanyama, the ODM constitution gives the NEC powers to discipline leaders when necessary.

The reasons mentioned for Sifuna’s possible removal included expressing personal opinions that went against party positions. These positions involved support for a broad-based government and a 10-point agenda agreed on by the party.

There were also concerns that he missed several NEC meetings, which added to the unease among some members.

The show also explored wider changes within the Orange Democratic Movement after the death of Raila Odinga.

According to the guest, the party now has different groups with different views on its direction. Some members feel ODM has moved away from speaking for ordinary citizens and is now more focused on political deals and power sharing.

This shift has caused discomfort, especially among those who still believe in the party’s original goals such as human rights, devolution, and social justice.

Youth voices were a major focus of the interview. Cyphrine Wanyama shared that young people in ODM often feel stuck between older leaders and a new generation pushing for change.

Since the 2010 constitution, many young leaders want to focus on jobs, economic freedom, and accountability.

However, they feel decisions are sometimes made without consulting them. He stressed the need for open discussion and inclusion instead of decisions being made behind closed doors.

Another issue raised on the show was the possibility of outside influence. Some believe that people linked to William Ruto could be trying to influence ODM from within.

These claims include fears of hidden loyalties and pressure to move the party closer to rival alliances.

This has raised concerns about whether ODM can remain independent and strong as an opposition party.

On the impact of Sifuna’s removal, the views shared were balanced. Some see it as a way to restore discipline, while others fear it could weaken the party.

Wanyama encouraged members, especially the youth, to stay united, strengthen party structures, and think beyond the 2027 elections.

The episode of Political Ringside ended with a reminder of ODM’s roots and the need to stay connected to the people. The calm and direct discussion allowed viewers to understand the issue without being pushed to one side, offering a clear picture of the challenges facing one of Kenya’s major political parties.
