Police in Kenya are looking into whether the killing of Dr Victoria Mutiso might be connected to the earlier murder of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu. Detectives are studying possible links between the two cases, focusing on disputed property, family relationships and people who appear in both investigations.
The inquiry remains open and no final motive has been confirmed.Dr Mutiso, a neuroscientist and former director at the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health, was shot dead on 29 July 2026 while travelling in an Uber in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area.
Gunmen approached the vehicle and opened fire. She was rushed to hospital but did not survive.
Investigations later pointed to a long-running land dispute involving property in Mlolongo as a possible reason for the attack.
Several people, including members of a family connected to her husband through a previous marriage, have been questioned or charged in connection with the case. Police officers have also been named as suspects, with some still being sought.
Nearly a year earlier, on 9 September 2025, lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu was killed in a drive-by shooting on Magadi Road in Karen. Attackers on a motorcycle fired multiple shots at his car as he drove home. Mbobu was a well-known advocate and former chairman of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal.
He had handled legal work for Professor David Musyimi Ndetei, Dr Mutiso’s husband, in a lengthy property battle that began after Ndetei’s divorce from his first wife years earlier.
That earlier court fight over matrimonial assets is one of the threads detectives are now examining.
The same family names surface in both cases, and the property disputes stretch back many years.
Investigators are checking whether individuals involved in the Mutiso case also had any connection to Mbobu’s killing.
They are reviewing statements, financial records and patterns in how the two attacks were carried out.
Both involved gunmen on motorcycles and appeared carefully planned rather than random.
Authorities have stressed that the work is still continuing. No firm conclusions have been reached about a shared motive or a common network.
Fresh evidence in the Mutiso investigation simply led detectives to revisit the unsolved Mbobu case and look for any overlapping details.
The two murders remain separate inquiries that may or may not prove linked once all the information is gathered.
The deaths of a respected researcher and a senior lawyer have drawn public attention in Kenya. Families of both victims continue to wait for answers as police follow the leads that have emerged from the disputed land and the personal relationships surrounding it.
