Police and opposition clash over truth behind Koimburi’s disappearance

Date:

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has described the reported abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi as political theatrics. According to Kanja, police investigations found no signs of any kidnapping at the place where Koimburi was allegedly discovered.

He says officers from Juja visited the supposed scene of the incident quickly and looked at every detail. After comparing the area’s vegetation and road with what appeared in a widely circulated video showing the alleged kidnapping, police concluded that the locations did not match at all.

Kanja explained that even though the video tried to show a violent abduction, nothing in the actual area supported that claim. The police found several inconsistencies when they examined the coffee farm where Koimburi was found. This farm belongs to businessman Jimmy Wanjigi. The caretaker, Moses Kariuki, was questioned by the police and clearly stated that he had not seen any incident take place there. This raised further doubts about whether an abduction even happened.

The Inspector General also questioned how Koimburi’s friends and family knew exactly where to find him if he had truly been kidnapped and dumped. He pointed out that Koimburi was taken to the hospital in his own car, which raises more suspicion.

According to police, the vehicle used to drive him to the hospital had the registration number KCJ 660P and was owned by Koimburi himself. Even more interesting, the car was driven by Frida Njeri, who was also said to be the first person to find him. This makes it unclear how someone could be abducted, yet end up being rescued by a person who also had access to his car.

Despite these findings, opposition leaders continue to believe that Koimburi was genuinely abducted. Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka visited Koimburi at Karen Hospital and strongly denied claims that the MP faked the whole thing. Kalonzo said that anyone suggesting Koimburi staged the abduction was spreading a false story.

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi also rejected the police findings. He told Kanja to stop misleading people, saying such explanations do not make sense. Muturi added that the trend of abductions must come to an end in Kenya.

With both sides holding firm positions, the situation is still very confusing. The police findings cast serious doubts on the abduction story, but opposition leaders insist it really happened.

The fact that Koimburi ended up in a familiar place, was picked up in his own car, and taken to hospital by someone close to him only adds to the mystery. The public is now left with more questions than answers as the full truth remains unclear.
