Oburu Odinga dismisses claims linking Raila Junior’s crowning to politics

Date:

Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has moved to clarify that the recent crowning of Raila Odinga Junior as the head of the Odinga family should not be mistaken for a political endorsement or succession plan.

According to Oburu, the event held in Nondo, Siaya County, on October 23, 2025, was purely a family ritual meant to honour cultural traditions following the passing of the late Raila Amolo Odinga.

The ceremony took place at Kango Ka Jaramogi, four days after the burial of the former Prime Minister, and was intended to mark the end of the mourning period and the beginning of normal family life after their father’s demise.

Oburu explained that the ritual was an essential part of Luo customs, meant to officially empower the eldest son to take charge of the homestead. In this case, Raila Junior was installed as the symbolic head of the Odinga family, tasked with maintaining order and unity within the household.

The senator stressed that this act had no political significance and should not be linked to discussions about who will inherit Raila Odinga’s political legacy.

He made it clear that the event was about cultural continuity and the proper handing over of domestic authority within the family.

“The ceremony is symbolically meant to give my late brother’s son, Raila Junior, the seat of power of the home, not political leadership,” Oburu said during the event.

“Together with his mother, Mama Ida Odinga, who will guide him and offer advice, he must stand firm and lead the home as per our traditions.” He added that the larger Odinga family remains under his guidance as the elder in the lineage, even as Junior takes responsibility for the immediate household.

The installation ceremony followed Luo traditional customs, where Raila Junior was shaved while sitting on a stool, with his wife standing beside him.

The ritual symbolized a transition from mourning to leadership, representing rebirth and readiness to take on family responsibilities. He was later handed a spear and a shield, traditional emblems of authority, power, and protection, symbolizing his new role as the custodian of the Odinga homestead.

Despite public speculation that the event could signal the beginning of a political succession plan, Oburu dismissed such interpretations as misplaced. He noted that while the Odinga name carries political weight, the family remains focused on preserving its traditions and values first.

He emphasized that the decision to crown Junior was purely based on Luo customs and had nothing to do with politics.

The event drew a mixture of emotions, as it also represented the end of an era for the Odinga family. For many, it was a reminder of the late Raila Odinga’s long influence in Kenyan politics and society, but for the family, it was a moment to reflect, heal, and preserve their lineage through cultural observance. Oburu’s clarification now sets the record straight that the crowning of Raila Junior was a personal and cultural matter meant to maintain family unity and not a preparation for political leadership.
