Nairobi traffic boss Joseph Chirchir exposed in multi-million bribery scandal

Date:

Cyprian Is Nyakundi has exposed yet another major corruption scandal within Nairobi’s Traffic Police Department, revealing how senior officers have turned law enforcement into a bribery and extortion enterprise.

According to the report shared by Cyprian Is Nyakundi on X, Nairobi County Traffic Commandant Joseph Chirchir and a senior female officer have been at the center of a well-coordinated scheme where bribes are collected from traffic police officers and extorted from Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators.

This revelation has triggered an investigation into the officers, uncovering the depth of corruption within the traffic department.

Sources indicate that the female officer operated a WhatsApp group where she coordinated the collection of bribes from police officers in different parts of Nairobi.

The funds were funneled through her M-Pesa and bank accounts before being handed over to Chirchir. The officers under his command were forced to participate in the scheme, extorting money from PSV operators, truck drivers, and motorists to meet their superiors’ demands.

Failure to comply resulted in transfers to remote areas or other forms of punishment. This has been an ongoing practice that has crippled traffic operations in the city, turning the department into a tool for personal enrichment rather than road safety enforcement.

On February 21, 2025, investigations led to searches at Chirchir’s residences in Nairobi and Baringo Counties. Investigators seized several items, including a safe suspected to contain records or cash linked to the bribery scheme.

While Chirchir was released on police bond, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is still scrutinizing the evidence to establish the full extent of his involvement.

Cyprian Is Nyakundi’s exposé also revealed that junior officers had raised concerns about Chirchir’s corrupt activities, accusing him of coercing them into paying bribes and forcing them to contribute money for his retirement parties. It is alleged that he even registered a phone number under another identity to secretly collect the bribes.

This investigation comes just days after the killing of Embakasi traffic base officer Obala Wasiaya, who was run over by a speeding Subaru (KDP 399V) while manning traffic as President William Ruto’s convoy passed through the area.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested, but Cyprian Is Nyakundi has reported that powerful figures within the government are interfering with the case to deny justice to Wasiaya’s grieving family.

Sources indicate that influential individuals are working behind the scenes to ensure that those responsible face no consequences, leaving the officer’s family in pain.

Wasiaya had been preparing to bury his younger brother and uncle before his untimely death, making this tragedy even more devastating. This case exposes the deeply entrenched corruption in Kenya’s police force, where senior officers abuse their positions to accumulate wealth at the expense of the public. With Chirchir’s bribery scandal now in the spotlight, the EACC’s handling of the case will be a test of whether the government is genuinely committed to fighting corruption or if it will allow yet another well-connected officer to escape justice.

If Chirchir and his accomplices walk free, it will reinforce the belief that corruption within Kenya’s law enforcement is untouchable, while ordinary Kenyans continue to suffer under the weight of a broken system.
