Nairobi funeral home scandal: How a city mortuary became a cover-up hub for police killings under Sakaja’s watch

Date:

Nation Africa recently reported shocking details about how Nairobi Funeral Home, formerly known as City Mortuary, has allegedly become a cover-up site for police officers involved in extrajudicial killings. This revelation raises serious concerns about the state of Nairobi under Governor Johnson Sakaja.

While Sakaja spends time making public statements and acting as if he is in control, the reality on the ground tells a different story. The city is sinking into lawlessness, and instead of fixing the mess, Sakaja seems more focused on public relations than real leadership.

Under his watch, Nairobi has become a dangerous place where police brutality is on the rise, and accountability is nonexistent.

The funeral home, meant to be a place of dignity for the dead, is now being linked to cases of missing persons whose bodies mysteriously appear there.

Reports indicate that police officers accused of killing innocent people often manipulate records at the mortuary to erase any trace of wrongdoing. Despite the alarming number of unclaimed bodies piling up, Sakaja’s government has done little to investigate the sources of these deaths.

Instead, he has been quick to authorize the disposal of bodies in mass graves, raising concerns that evidence of police killings is being destroyed.

Sakaja has positioned himself as a progressive leader, but the reality is that Nairobi is deteriorating rapidly. The Nairobi County Assembly has even launched probes into allegations of corruption and mismanagement at the funeral home, with claims that rogue officers work with the management to cover up killings.

Questions have been raised about financial irregularities and secret bank accounts controlled by officials at the mortuary. If the county government cannot manage a simple facility like a funeral home, how can it be trusted to handle bigger responsibilities like security, healthcare, and infrastructure? Sakaja’s silence on these issues suggests either incompetence or complicity.

Public outcry over the excessive force used by police, especially during protests, has been growing. Sakaja condemned police brutality during the Finance Bill protests, but his words were empty. If he was serious about protecting Nairobi residents, he would have taken action against the officers responsible for violent crackdowns.

Instead, he has allowed the same police force to continue harassing citizens while his administration turns a blind eye. Even after Nation Africa exposed these injustices, there has been no serious response from Sakaja.

The mismanagement of the city does not stop at the funeral home. Nairobi is dealing with poor waste management, collapsing infrastructure, and rising crime. The governor’s failures are evident everywhere, from the filthy streets to the overcrowded hospitals. While businesses struggle due to high taxation and insecurity, Sakaja continues to prioritize cosmetic changes rather than real solutions.

The funeral home scandal is just one example of how deep the rot goes in Nairobi’s leadership. With unclaimed bodies piling up and families unable to get justice, it is clear that Sakaja has lost control of Nairobi.

His administration has failed to protect residents, and the police continue to operate with impunity. Until Nairobi gets real leadership that is willing to stand up against corruption and police brutality, the city will remain a playground for criminals, both in and out of uniform.
