A recent discussion on Mwelekeo TV has brought attention to an issue that many business owners quietly struggle with today.
The program focused on how businesses are relying too much on social media and why that approach is no longer enough. The conversation felt practical and honest, especially for small and growing businesses trying to survive in a competitive digital space.
Through real examples and simple explanations, the show made it clear that depending only on social media pages can limit growth and even put a business at risk.
During the show, host Mercy Otieno spoke with Dan Majani, who works in digital marketing through his company, Digipore Solutions.
Dan explained that a proper website is no longer a luxury but a basic requirement for any serious business. He pointed out that when customers want to buy a product or work with a company, the first thing they often do is search online for a website.
If they only find social media pages, many people start to doubt how serious or stable the business is, especially corporate clients and partners.
He also explained the risks of building everything on social media platforms. Social media companies control visibility through algorithms that change often.
A post that reaches many people today may reach very few tomorrow. Accounts can also be suspended or banned without warning.
Dan shared examples of Kenyan sellers who depended on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, only to lose access to their customers overnight.
When that happens, sales stop immediately because there is no other channel to rely on.
A website, on the other hand, gives full control to the business owner. Dan described it as a worker that never rests. It stays online all day and night, allowing customers to read about products, check prices, and make purchases at any time.
He talked about online shops that include payment options such as M-Pesa, which makes buying easy for local customers.
Websites can also collect customer details, making it easier to follow up and build long-term relationships.
Search engines were another key part of the discussion. Dan explained how Google helps customers find businesses when they are already looking for specific products or services.
A website that is well set up with basic SEO can appear in search results and attract visitors without paying for ads.
He added that new AI features on search pages often pull information directly from websites, which gives businesses with websites an extra advantage.
Social media was not dismissed completely. Dan said it is a good place to start because it is affordable and helps build an audience.
However, he advised business owners to guide that audience to a website where actual sales and serious inquiries happen. He gave examples of well-known companies like Uber and Airbnb, which built their operations around websites before expanding elsewhere.
On cost, Dan made it clear that websites are affordable compared to their value.
He explained typical price ranges and advised people to work with developers who offer ongoing support.
He emphasized that a good website should be fast, easy to use, and clear.
