Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has asked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to investigate claims of a planned scheme to rig the Mbeere North by-elections.
Muturi said the plot was being coordinated by a group of politicians seeking to influence the November 27 vote in favour of a government-backed candidate.
He alleged that the group intended to hire goons, bribe voters and cause disruptions in targeted polling stations.
According to him, the individuals involved would mainly be sourced from Nairobi and Kiambu and assisted by some National Government Administration Officers.
He further claimed that the groups would be escorted to the polling centres with the help of certain police officers to interfere with the voting process.
Muturi said residents had already reported the presence of unfamiliar groups in Kanyuambura, Ishiara and Siakago towns, raising concerns about planned disturbances ahead of the by-election.
“The schemes to corrupt the Mbeere North by-election are orchestrated, financed and deployed. Importing goons, bribing voters and intimidating citizens will not change the will of the people,” he said.
In his petition to the IEBC, Muturi asked the commission to strengthen security, stop voter interference and ensure transparency on election day.
He also urged the electoral body to provide an updated voter register to prevent complaints of missing names at polling stations.
Muturi said the commission must address the concerns urgently to protect the credibility of the upcoming vote.
His appeal comes a day after IEBC warned Kenyans against double registration and falsifying voter details ahead of the by-elections.
