A tense and tragic situation unfolded in Matisi, Kitale, after a DCI officer was fatally stabbed during an attempt to arrest a murder suspect.
The officer, who was part of a team of detectives on the operation, was attacked by a gang that tried to rescue the suspect.
In the chaos that followed, one youth was also shot dead. The incident has left the community in shock as investigators work to understand what led to the violent confrontation.
Trans Nzoia County Criminal Investigation Officer, Josephat Ndung’u, confirmed the killing and said that investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack and the exact chain of events.
He explained that detectives are still gathering information, and one suspect has already been arrested in connection with the incident. Officers are now focusing on identifying other individuals who may have played a role in planning or carrying out the attack.
According to early reports, the slain detective was in the company of colleagues when they arrived in Matisi to arrest a suspect linked to a murder case. Before they could complete their mission, a gang confronted them, leading to the deadly confrontation.
Authorities are now piecing together how the attack started, how the gang managed to intervene, and whether the assailants had advance knowledge of the operation.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority, which usually investigates attacks involving police officers, has not yet released a report. IPOA’s role is important in such cases because it examines whether the officers followed the right procedures and whether any negligence or misconduct may have contributed to the incident.
Their findings often help guide future operations and strengthen accountability within the security sector.
The killing of the Kitale-based officer comes just weeks after another disturbing incident involving DCI officers. On November 12, three detectives were seriously injured during a confrontation with armed assailants in Kasipul Constituency, Homa Bay County.
The officers had been carrying out a security operation targeting suspects linked to the killings of two youths in the Opondo area.
Among the injured was Rachuonyo South Sub-County DCI boss, Daniel Muhuhi.Reports from that incident indicated that the officers had tracked the suspects to Kachien Village, at the homestead of the late former Kasipul MP, Ong’ondo Were.
They had earlier traced the same group to Kosele Trading Centre after receiving intelligence on their movements. However, when the officers moved in to arrest them, the suspects allegedly ambushed the team and launched a violent attack before fleeing.
These repeated attacks on detectives highlight the increasing risks that officers face while pursuing dangerous criminals and responding to violent crime.
