Lawmakers uncover painful truth behind illegal kidney harvesting targeting the poor

Date:

A shocking scandal is unfolding in Kenya, revealing how a dangerous network has been harvesting and trafficking human organs, especially kidneys, right under the country’s nose. What was first seen as a single hospital’s wrongdoing has now grown into something far more serious.

Lawmakers are now being told that several hospitals, not just the Mediheal Group, may be involved in a well-organized syndicate that preys on young Kenyans. These youths are lured with promises of fast money, only to be left with health problems, fake identities, and far less money than what was agreed.

Nandi Hills MP Bernard Kitur gave disturbing details while speaking before the National Assembly’s Health Committee. He explained how rogue doctors, dishonest brokers, and even government officers from the Department of Registration Services are part of this operation.

According to Kitur, whistle-blowers from Mediheal Hospital revealed how the syndicate uses forged national IDs and the names of dead people to secretly carry out illegal organ transplants without attracting attention from authorities. One of the most painful stories Kitur shared was about a young man named Amon Kipruto Meli, just 22 years old, who was promised KSh600,000 if he donated a kidney.

The operation was done in December 2023 at Mediheal Hospital, but Amon never received the full amount. Instead, he developed health complications and later found out that a fake ID had been created in his name, now changed to Amon Hussein Kipruto, using the photo of a dead man from Mosorio village.

Kitur told the committee that the fake IDs are used to create new bank accounts where the syndicate moves money in secret. This is how they hide their activities while continuing to take advantage of desperate youth.

The matter was reported at Langas Police Station in August 2024, and private investigators have already started connecting the dots between hospital staff and corrupt government workers.

Another heartbreaking case involved a man named Emanuel Kipkosgey, who was promised KSh1.2 million for his kidneys. He only got KSh50,000 before surgery and KSh400,000 afterward, far below what he had been promised.

These stories point to a dangerous trend where poor young people are being misled, used, and then abandoned by a powerful network of criminals in the medical world.Although Mediheal Hospital is at the center of the current investigations, Kitur warned that the evidence shows this is just a small part of a much bigger problem.

Other private clinics and medical officers across the country might also be part of the same illegal business. The Health Committee, led by Seme MP James Nyikal, will spend the next 90 days investigating these serious crimes. Their goal is to uncover how deep this network goes and make sure those responsible are held to account.
