Kenya set to gain big as FIFA and Saudi Fund unlock major stadium financing

Date:

Kenya now stands among the countries expected to gain from a new international financing programme aimed at improving sports infrastructure in developing nations.

This opportunity comes after the Saudi Fund for Development and FIFA signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will unlock up to Ksh129 billion in concessional loans for Member Associations.

Kenya is one of the countries eligible to benefit, and the funding is expected to support the construction and upgrading of FIFA-certified stadiums across the country.

The programme is designed to support countries that have shown a clear plan to use sports as a tool for development, which places Kenya in a strong position given its recent efforts to grow football and invest in sporting facilities.

The mission of the partnership is not only about building stadiums but also about helping countries use sports to support national development goals.

Part of the focus is on creating economic opportunities, improving community spaces and motivating young people to take part in sports.

Sultan bin Abdulrahman Al-Marshad, the CEO of the Saudi Fund for Development, emphasised this approach through his statement: “Sport is more than competition. It’s a catalyst for development and inclusion. Through concessional financing, we are helping countries build the infrastructure they need to unlock potential, empower young people, and strengthen communities for generations to come.”

The new facilities expected to be built or upgraded under this programme are likely to support job creation and stimulate local economies.

Stadiums often bring new business opportunities around them, including shops, services and small enterprises that grow in response to increased activity.

Young athletes in the beneficiary countries will also have safer and more modern environments to train and compete, which can improve talent development over time.

Such spaces also help communities by offering places for training, events and local engagement.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino backed the partnership, describing it as an important step for global football development. He highlighted the financial support available to Member Associations and explained why the plan matters.

“The memorandum of understanding with the Saudi Fund for Development will provide up to USD 1 billion in loans to finance the construction and enhancement of FIFA-certified stadiums,” Infantino said.

“This is a crucial step in ensuring our Member Associations have the facilities to make football truly global.” His remarks reflect FIFA’s goal of supporting all member nations in building proper facilities, something that has often been a challenge for developing football countries.

Kenya’s recent progress in sports, especially football, has helped strengthen its position as a country ready to attract more investment in this sector. The successful co-hosting of the African Nations Championships in August 2025 was a key moment, showing the improvements made in stadiums and football operations.

Infantino’s attendance at the final at Kasarani also gave him a firsthand view of the government’s efforts under President William Ruto’s administration.

Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed expressed hope that Kenya would be among the main beneficiaries of the new financing programme. He welcomed the commitment shown by the Saudi Fund for Development and recognised the potential impact on Kenyan football.

“I appreciate the Saudi Fund for Development for stepping forward with support that will help developing Member Associations like FKF invest in modern, FIFA-certified infrastructure. This is the kind of commitment that strengthens football ecosystems, creates opportunity for our youth, and lays the foundation for long-term growth,” the FKF boss said.
