A special police unit has been deployed to Kangema in Murang’a County after reports suggested that a group of goons might try to burn down the Kangema Police Station during the burial of Boniface, a young street vendor who was recently shot dead in Nairobi.
Boniface, who came from Kangema, lost his life while selling face masks during protests in Nairobi. The demonstrations were in response to the mysterious death of Albert Ojwang, which sparked public anger across several counties.
The decision to send in extra security follows a deadly incident in Kangema where two people were killed during the Saba Saba protests. Witnesses say the two were involved in a confrontation with police officers near the Kangema Police Station and were shot as they allegedly attempted to set fire to the station.
This raised serious concerns about possible revenge attacks or more violence as Boniface’s funeral approaches.
Boniface’s burial is scheduled to take place on July 11th in his home area in Kangema. Authorities say they have received intelligence that certain groups are planning to use the funeral as an opportunity to create chaos. In response, police are setting up a strong presence in the area to prevent any destruction of property or clashes during the funeral.
The special unit is expected to work with local officers to maintain peace and respond quickly to any threats.
Security officers have asked residents and mourners to respect the funeral and remember Boniface in a peaceful way. They emphasized that the family deserves a quiet and respectful burial without disruption.
Police also warned that anyone trying to take advantage of the situation to cause unrest would face immediate action. Their message was clear that while peaceful mourning is allowed, any acts of lawlessness will not be tolerated.
Tensions remain high in Kangema, with many residents still shaken by both the death of Boniface and the recent shootings during the protests. Local leaders are also calling for calm, saying that violence will only make the situation worse.
The hope is that Boniface can be laid to rest with the dignity he deserves and without more bloodshed.
