The Jubilee Party is slowly preparing for the 2027 general elections, and its Secretary General, Jeremiah Kioni, has begun revealing what could be the party’s strategy.
Kioni shared that the party is seriously considering endorsing Fred Matiang’i as its presidential candidate. This move is seen as an attempt to challenge the leadership of President William Ruto, who is expected to seek re-election.
According to Kioni, Fred Matiang’i stands out because of his past experience in government and his close connection with former President Uhuru Kenyatta. During Uhuru’s final years in office, Matiang’i was trusted with key responsibilities and led several important projects. His role in the interior ministry and his ability to manage national duties gave him a reputation as a serious and capable public servant.
Kioni believes these qualities make Matiang’i a strong candidate to face Ruto in 2027.However, Kioni also brought another interesting name into the conversation former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Since leaving office, Gachagua has taken a more critical stance against the current administration, often highlighting issues of mismanagement and broken promises.
Kioni praised Gachagua’s courage to speak out and suggested that the Jubilee Party could benefit from his involvement in their strategy.Though Matiang’i is the top choice for the presidential ticket, Kioni acknowledged that Gachagua still holds value in the political space. His ability to connect with the public and form alliances could play a big role in shaping the opposition’s strength. If Gachagua manages to rebuild bridges within the Jubilee Party and with other opposition leaders, he may influence how the final campaign team looks.
Gachagua’s popularity and how people view his work since leaving office could affect his chances of being on the ticket, either as a running mate or in another key position. The Jubilee Party is likely to consider factors like regional representation, voter support, and internal unity when deciding on its leadership team. If they choose unity and experience over personal differences, Gachagua might emerge as an important figure in the campaign.
Kioni hinted that Gachagua’s past ties with Uhuru Kenyatta might be useful, especially if Jubilee wants to present a united and organized front. Whether as a candidate or a campaign partner, Gachagua’s next steps could shape the direction the opposition takes ahead of the 2027 elections. The decisions made now by Kioni and other Jubilee leaders will determine whether they can mount a serious challenge to the current regime.
