James Murua, a well-known blogger and podcaster, has made a heartfelt appeal to the Kenyan government and the African Union to step in after his wife, celebrated author Zukiswa Wanner, was taken by the Israeli military. Wanner was aboard a humanitarian flotilla that was on its way to Gaza, carrying aid meant for civilians caught up in the ongoing war.
The incident took place early Thursday morning, October 2, at about 4:00 am, when Israeli forces intercepted over 40 boats that were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla.
More than 450 foreign activists who were on board the vessels were captured and taken into custody in Israel.
Murua explained that his wife, who is South African, had joined a delegation from her home country with the aim of delivering food and medical supplies to people in Gaza, where the humanitarian crisis continues to worsen.
Instead, the mission was blocked, and all the aid workers, including his wife, were detained. In his statement, Murua expressed deep concern for her safety, noting that Israel has often treated those who challenge its military operations with what he described as extreme cruelty.
He said he feared that Wanner, along with the other activists, could face harsh treatment.
He called on Kenya, where Wanner has lived for the past fourteen years, as well as the African Union, to use their influence to push for her release and that of others taken.
Murua emphasized that his wife’s commitment to the Palestinian cause has been lifelong. He shared that she was born in 1976 in Lusaka during her parents’ exile and grew up in Harare, surrounded by the struggles of liberation movements.
Her activism has been consistent, and in 2024 she even returned the Goethe Medal, an award she had received from the German government for cultural achievements, as an act of protest.
She made that decision after accusing Germany of supporting what she described as the genocide of Palestinians while also suppressing dissenting artists who opposed Israel’s actions.
Murua also called on fellow activists across the world to continue speaking up against the violence in Gaza, insisting that the time to stand with Palestine is now.
He added a personal note, pointing out that their son, Jama, needs his mother back home, underscoring the human cost of the political and military struggles unfolding far away.
The abduction comes against the backdrop of a long and bitter conflict between Israel and Palestine, rooted in disputes over territories such as Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza.
In October 2023, Hamas launched a deadly attack in southern Israel that left more than 1,200 people dead and saw several hostages taken.
This marked the beginning of Israel’s most intense military response in recent years, including widespread airstrikes and a ground invasion into Gaza. The war has left tens of thousands of civilians dead, destroyed vital infrastructure, and forced millions from their homes, leading to extreme shortages of essential supplies like food, medicine, clean water, and shelter.
Murua’s appeal is not only the personal anguish of a family separated but also the urgency for humanitarian intervention in a conflict that continues to cause immense suffering on both sides.
