Indian doctors recount Raila Odinga’s final struggle with multiple health complications before his passing

Date:

Doctors at Devamatha Hospital in Southern India have shed light on the final health struggles of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, revealing that he was suffering from several illnesses before his passing early Wednesday.

The team attending to him said the ODM leader was battling diabetes, kidney complications, and deep vein thrombosis in his right leg, conditions that had already weakened his body.

He was also known to have experienced previous episodes of collapsing, raising concerns about his general health in recent months.According to medical staff at the hospital, Raila was rushed in after collapsing from what was later confirmed to be cardiac arrest.

Despite quick intervention by specialists, efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. One of the doctors who performed the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) explained that they worked tirelessly using every possible life-saving procedure but could not restore his heartbeat.

The team expressed deep sorrow over his death, sending their condolences to his family and the people of Kenya.

Dr. Alphonse, a senior cardiologist at Devamatha Hospital, explained that when Raila was brought in, his condition was already critical. Tests revealed that he was diabetic, hypertensive, and suffering from chronic kidney disease.

The doctor said that upon physical examination, it was clear his right leg had significant swelling caused by Deep Vein Thrombosis, a condition that can lead to dangerous blood clots.

She said that chronic illnesses like diabetes and kidney disease often make the body vulnerable, especially in elderly patients, and that despite their best efforts, his condition was too advanced to reverse.

The medical team said Raila had been under treatment at the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre before his sudden collapse during a morning walk.

When he was transferred to Devamatha Hospital, a team of specialists from various departments worked together to stabilize him, but the complications proved overwhelming.

Dr. Alphonse described the moment as emotionally heavy for everyone involved, saying that they had hoped for a different outcome but were forced to accept that they had done all they could.

Hospital sources revealed that Raila’s final hours were marked by continuous medical attention as doctors struggled to save his life.

The staff described the situation as one of urgency, teamwork, and deep sadness when it became clear that he would not recover. His passing has left a deep void both within the medical team that treated him and across the world, where he was admired as a strong leader and advocate for justice.

Raila’s body is currently enroute to Kenya, as preparations for a state funeral continue. Messages of condolence have continued to pour in from across the globe, with leaders and citizens remembering him as a symbol of resilience and democracy.

Many have spoken of his lifelong dedication to fighting for equality and good governance, saying that even in his final moments, he remained a man of courage and conviction whose influence will continue to inspire generations to come.
