Cyprian Nyakundi has once again exposed a major issue affecting Kenyans, this time involving the Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (Eldowas). Through his X handle, he has shared disturbing details about the worsening health crisis in Uasin Gishu, where residents are blaming contaminated water for a rise in illnesses.
Photos and complaints have flooded social media, showing discolored water coming from taps and people suffering from severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and general body weakness.
The situation has left many families in distress, with children missing school and adults struggling to go about their daily activities due to persistent illness.
For weeks, residents have been raising concerns about the safety of Eldowas water, but the company has continued to insist that its supply meets safety standards. In February, the company released a public statement dismissing claims of contamination, assuring the public that tests had been conducted and the water was safe for consumption.
However, these assurances have done little to ease fears, as more people continue to fall sick. The growing number of cases has left many questioning whether the issue is being ignored or deliberately covered up.
Reports indicate that hospitals in Eldoret are slowly filling up with patients complaining of similar symptoms. Some residents have resorted to boiling water or buying bottled alternatives, but not everyone can afford these options.
Those most affected are low-income households that have no choice but to rely on Eldowas for their daily water needs. Many parents now find themselves helpless as their children suffer, with some families making multiple trips to the hospital without receiving clear explanations for the illnesses.
One resident, frustrated by the situation, sent a message stating, “Hii ndio maji ya Eldowas. We are suffering in Eldoret.” The statement captures the anger and fear gripping many in the county. Calls for urgent intervention have intensified, with residents now demanding that Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii personally address the matter.
They want independent investigations to be conducted to determine whether Eldowas is supplying contaminated water and if the company has been hiding crucial information about the quality of its supply.
Some have also pointed fingers at the county government for its silence, questioning why no serious action has been taken despite widespread complaints. The situation has sparked concerns that if the issue is not resolved soon, it could escalate into a full-blown public health crisis. Medical experts warn that continued exposure to contaminated water could lead to more severe health complications, including long-term gastrointestinal issues.
Residents now feel abandoned, with no clear answers from the authorities responsible for ensuring their safety.
